Non-alcoholic Wine

Hi all

Can anyone recommend a quality de-alcoholised wine? I have a close friend who is on the wagon, but used to appreciate wine to some degree. Has anyone had any experience with non-alcoholic wines? Red if possible.

And yes feel free to say it's not wine if it doesn't have alcohol. Bonus points for best quips.

Cheers

Michael

In a word- no, and I think you gave a very appropriate reason.
If he drinks de-alcoholised wine, he will probably just think about what he is missing. Best to drink something entirely different IMHO, and forget about wine of any description.
Maybe someone else has had some reasonable stuff, but I shudder everytime I walk past it in the supermarket.

The best one I've found so far is Edenvale Shiraz. Available from both major supermarkets. On special it sells for around $7 a bottle (last week in Coles at $14 for 2). You'll find it near the ginger beer, sparkling cider, etc section. Quite drinkable IMHO - it is recognizably shiraz. All the others I've tried are DNPIM.

There's an American one available here - Ariel - the whites better than the red but basically it's all shit. Much better off having a lime and soda with a splash of bitters.

As pointless as a bowling ball

or as Blackadder would say

About as pointless as a pointy thing with all the points knocked off

maybe your friend can taste your wine and then spittoon rather than swallow it?

The Edenvale shiraz is a BIG step up from Ariels IMHO. Chalk and cheese.

Michael,
You may like to get a bottle of Ariel Blanc or Rouge in the waters section of Woolworths Supermarkets. Good luck from Michael Timmins (we are ClearMind their importers)

I love the marketing. "Blanc or Rouge"- very sophisticated! But who would drink "White or Red"?
It reminds me of the "Maserati Quattroporte". I tell my kids they call it "Maserati 4 door" in Italy.
