I know this is a pretty broad question, but I’ve over stocked on Cab Sav over the years (not a bad thing usually) and want to balance out a bit more with Shiraz. Would really like to hear opinions I also think this might be a fairly difficult price bracket cause there is so much out there (which is my reason behind the question).

Howdy Sam,

I am a big fan of the 2005 Teusner Albert Shiraz. Smooth, rich and very easy drinking. Our host (Gavin) I think sells it!. Bloody good wine and will only get better over the next 5-10 years.

For mine it would be in order, Rockford BP, Schubert Gooseyard Block, Kalleske & Turkey Flat.

Of the blends - Yalumba Signature, Penfolds Bin 389 & Glaetzer Annaperna (some may be morte cab than shiraz).

Was variable in the past but recent vintages i.e. 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 have been consistently good. If you google you would find quite a few reviews.

Yep, Vat 9 is the wine most represented in my cellar. Some 70's, few from the 80's, heaps from 90's vintages, and a bit since the 90's. I probably should drink more and write them up.

Actually, I had an '82 Vat 9, from what I recall, over the holidays. It was hot, and most people wanted whites, so I had a glass or two and it went back in the fridge. I forgot about it for one or two nights, and came back to find it doing very well - especially when drunk with some fridge chill, much as I sometimes do for pinot noir or beaujolais. Old Hunters from the fridge was not something I'd ever thought of doing before, but worked out well that time.

Shaw and Smith and Glaetzer Annaperna sound good at the moment. Have a few 04 Cape Mentelle left which are delicious.

Rockford Basket Press might be a bit hard though. I had seen it yesterday for around $200+ a bottle here in a big chain Perth store. Please let me know if it is possible to pick it up at around $60 .

The mark ups on Rockford BP are ridiculous. I saw a 98 Rockford BP in Dan Murphy's for $250ish (may have even been more), 2002 for $120ish and 04 for $100ish.

All this for a wine that sells for about $50 at CD/mailing list.

Where do you stop though???

Oliver's Taranga Shiraz HJ Reserve ($40)
Kay Amery Shiraz Hillside ($40)
Richard Hamilton Centurion Shiraz ($??) - I think I'm up to my second to last '01 which is drinking rather nicely.

You can also occasionally pick up the St Henri around/just after release on special for the 55-65 mark, but you'd want to have some where to let 'em sleep for a few years.

thanks for the feedback on the Vat 9. I may try picking up a few old ones on Langtons to see what they are like. It seems the only Hunter Shiraz so far in the cellar are some McWilliams Maurice O'Shea 2000 and a whole lot of the Meera Park 05. Has anyone tried the McWilliams Maurice O'Shea recently?

I had my last bottle (Maurice O'Shea 2000) early last year. When I first started drinking them on release they were just superb. After about a year they seemed to go into a weird dull phase. Kept trying for a few more years then sold off most of what I had left last year. Still think it might return but just wasn’t sure. Interested to hear other opinions.

Tried the current release (2005) at the cellar door recently, I was a tad underwhelmed at the price point - even though it is definitely a good wine.

You must move in the wrong circles if you don't hear much about Vat9

Vat 9 is really on song again - esp. since 2006 and the 2007 is awesome.
From auction maybe 98 and 91 - I'd not go overboard on the others.

The 05 and 06 O'Shea are very good, pass on 04. O'Shea (good vintages) really needs about 14 or more years in the cellar..

Yep about $55, I think it's limited to 3 bottles per person.

All I need to do now is spend $600 on a ticket to Adelaide and pick up a few. Actually now that I think about it’s actually the same price as buying it here minus the free trip to SA .

Houghtons is great value. 2001 the best. Think I paid about $20 a few years back.

Ah you know me, just another dumb amateur trying to find his way in the big world of wine. If you like the 07 so much, I am happy to take the 07 4 Acres off your hands in return for some more 07 Vat 9.
