Bugging in the New Year

HadnÂ’t downloaded any e-mails for a few days during the holidays so today I open up Outlook Express version 6.00.2800.1123 running on Windows XP Home v. 5.1 and what do ya know, the standard folders (inbox, sent, drafts, etc,) are all empty and all my custom folders have disappeared !!!!
Found I had some maintenance settings set to 'compact messages when there is 20 percent wasted space', which shouldnÂ’t be a problem. It was like something had got in there and pressed the 'clean up' button.
CouldnÂ’t find the latest files with an unerase utility, just some deleted files which were more more or less empty, an 'inbox' contining 3 messages from 1998, so had to revert to last backup from November.
Anyone have a similar problem with this? A Y2.004K problem in Outlook Express, perhaps?
My virus definitions are up to date, according to Norton when I checked for new antiviruses and no viruses showed up on a full disk scan.
It's enough to drive one to drink. It's drinkies time anyway so time I stopped.

I hope this is not an omen for how things are going to turn out for me in 2004.

Cheers,
Sue

Sue,

Sorry to hear of your problem. I'm not familiar with this one, but I avoid Outlook Express like the plague, it really is a flaky product. I suggest you either install the full version of Outlook or get another email client such as Incredimail.

Sue,

You may want to ensure that your OE Personal Message Store setting has not changed. Check out Options/Maintenance/Store Folders to check. Mine are in c:\windows\application data\indentities\a long string of numbers characters\Microsoft\Outllok Express and I'd guess this would be consistent. There's one set of long string of numbers for each identity folder.

If there are still there then you can relink the folders.

You may want to check with your ISP to see if they've changed any of their settings as well. Some of the SPAM protection settings trap and delete things at the ISP level, if this is set too high, the can change what you see locally. This type of thing happened to Mum, although hers was initially triggered by changing Outlook file recieving rules at the PC end.

Hello

Couldn't agree more, I avoid Outlook too, not to mention that most viruses are designed to work with outlook.

I use Pegasus Mail myself, FWIW

Hi Gavin,

I used to use Pegasus in my old Uni days. No experience with this recently. Is is html enabled now?
Was thinking perhaps of changing to Netscape Communicator mail as had this on a CD and downloaded to computer when trying to sort this all out.
Anyone use this one?

Cheers,
Sue
