No doubt many of you will promise to cut down your spending on wine purchases in 2004 (like myself) but I was shocked to discover that I had accumulated 236 bottles in 2003. This was a little less that the 280-odd in 2002 (despite a stringent promise to maintain my 2003 NY's resolution to scale back significantly. With the hyped up 2002s coming in 04, it looks a forlorn hope ...
Just interested - anybody out there actually cut back significantly from 2002 to 2003? And what are ur hopes for 2004 - more or less?

I'll jump in since no one else has yet.
Now I'm not your usual wine lover, as a retailer I get most of the wine I drink free in the form of samples, some good, some bad, a few terrible, a few very good indeed.
As such, I now buy very little and my cellar stays small and contains only my favourites.
Added this year
2001 Wendourees
2001 Veritas the Hanisch
2001 Kays Block 6 Shiraz
1999 Leeuwin Art Series Chardonnay
2001 Howard Park Cabernet
2003 Grosset Rieslings
2003 Kilikanoon Reserve Riesling
and for enjoyment not cellaring varying Champagnes etc.
Previous to starting the business the cellar seemed to be growing each year however, despite my best efforts!

Well my wine cellar is actually smaller than it was a year ago by 20-30 bottles, so it can be done.
In fact in 2003 I spent less on wine than I ever have in a year - not bad considering the price rises we have seen on good wine!
Once more I bought a lot less flagship wine and my avg price paid per bottle dropped over $5. Apart from the magnum of '88 Dom I purchased, I kept sane all year really. Bought a pile of riesling as planned and kept away from top aussie reds cos me got too many!!
This year?? More of the same - buy less, buy smart, buy to a plan, though I can see a spend up at Te Mata with the 02's being released in feb. Fantastic Hawkes Bay vintage. Awatea/Coleraine, Unison Selection and Craggy Range look a must.
