Penfolds reds in Screwcap!

Post by PaulV »

Noticed in todays Aust. Financial Review in an ad for VC the following;

"Penfolds Thomas Hyland Shiraz 20002 & Cabernet Sauvignon 2002 under screwcap!"

" Its official. Australia's premier red-wine maker, Penfolds, has adopted the screw-cap. The decision follows a highly successful cork-versus-screw-cap trial bottling of 1996 Bin 389 Cabernet-Shiraz".

Says winemaker, Peter Taylor, " As more time goes by, the greater our preference for the screw-capped bottles. Thay are ageing exactly as you would expect a red of this calibre to age. But the retention of sweet fruit flavour is superior to that seen under cork. And where cork sealed bottles vary in quality, the screw-capped bottles show no detectable variation. The whole winemaking team is extremely excited by the long term quality implications of the screw-cap......... Confidence in the screw-cap is almost certain to lead to a wider rollout across the Penfolds red-wine range.".

"After recent discussions with winemaker Peter Taylor and Peter Gago, we believe the rollout could occur with the bottling of the 2003 vintage reds towards the end of next year."

Well there you have it.

Cheers

That's fantastic. Now we just need them to bottle some mainstream 'bin' wines under screwcap for us all to buy.

Cheers,

I agree, have been trying to convince Southcorp to do a special batch of the '02 Bin 389 in stelvin for independent retailers. Not holding my breath though. :(

Does anyone know if the 1996 Bin 389 under screwcap ever made its way to retail ?

Penfolds Thomas Hyland Shiraz 20002

Wow, nothing like waiting around to see if screwcaps are going to be a hit or not. But 18,000 years? :D

Has anyone tried the '02 Thomas Hyland cab or shiraz? Huon Hooke apparently highly recommended them in a recent article in SMH Good Living.
