The Auswine Forum

For quite a long time I looked at cellar management software products as I was interested in managing my growing wine collection. After quite a long time spent looking at products that were available commercially, I was just about to give up when I decided to find out what Internet based products were available.
To my good fortune I came across a site called 'MyWineAssistant' and decided to give it a go. That was about 10 months ago and now I find the site really great and provides me with everything I was looking for. Initially I joined as a free member, which you can do with no restrictions, and have since decided to pay a subscription fee of about $25.00 a year to be a 'Silver' member. The site is based in the US and has members all over the world. It runs a very good members forum where a whole range of wine related topics are discussed. It is controlled by a chap by the name of D.J. McQuade and I find him to be very obliging. I have made several suggestions about things I would like to see included and he has not hesitated to put them in. As a matter of fact he seems to encourage member input into improvements in the package.
I would recommend 'MyWineAssistant' to anyone looking for a very good cellar management package that does everything you want and doesn't cost the earth.
If anyone has any queries, just reply to this post and I will tell you what I can.

If this is truly a genuine post then I apologise, but trying to peddle a service and a rival forum on your first post is pretty poor form don't you think.

At first I wasn't going to reply to your latest post and then I thought, why not! There are a couple of issues I would like to raise.
1. The post re wine cellar management wasn't my first post as I had previously posted a hello on the 'Who Am I' forum.
2. I wasn't aware that there were forum rules about what you were and were not allowed to post as a new user. Maybe I should apologize to you for not asking your permission. I didn't realize that you were the 'Forum Police'.
3. I wasn't trying to 'peddle a service' at all. What I was trying to do was simply let others know about a wine related product that I had found to be very good. If others looked at it and found it a lot of crap then fine, that's their choice. If you are so concerned about the forum being used to 'peddle a service', then you better shut it down. I would suggest that the majority of posts would be along similar lines. Would you consider a post telling others about a great wine they had just had 'peddling a service' - I think not, but what is the difference.
4. The comment about a 'rival forum' is an interesting one. I didn't realize that this forum was 'at war' with the other wine related forums on the net. Do you hold the view that this forum is the only legitimate wine forum on the net? Maybe you should broaden your horizons and look around a bit, you might find that there is this big wide world out there and that there are many others that know a fair bit about wine themselves.

I think MB was given a bit of needless flak there, to be honest. I think he's made some fair points. My two pennorth worth...

I feel 'we' and I use the term loosely, are perhaps a little quick to judge!

I'd rather we let an occasional 'spam' through (with me to handle it later), than hassle new members unecessarily.

but then that's my view on forums and moderation I guess!

I'm a bit split on this one.

My initial reaction to MB's post was that it could have been spam but I wasn't sure. It was an unusually enthusiastic plug for a product for a first post and the Who am I post could have just been setting up for the spam to come later. So I can understand the initial scepticism of the 2 respondents.

But the point is that it could have been spam or it could have been genuine which it obviously turned out to be. So perhaps regulars shouldn't jump in boots and all and label someone a spammer until it's confirmed and as with all digital communication choice of words an the way they may be interpreted is sooooo important. Perhaps all parties could have been a little more conciliatory?

BTW - the comment about the forum being at war with other forums had me ROFLMAO.

I'm still in the stone ages. The cellar management system I use is the "stack & pile" method. Buy wines, cart them to the cellar, get as many wooden boxes as you can from any wines store you visit, put similar wines in the boxes and stack them against the wall.

Its cheap......except for the part about buying wines!

Thanks MB for letting me and others know about a Cellaring system, This is what forums are for aren't they?

I use a file which i created on a palm pilot and have it on my computer. Its simple and probably not the best system to use but it does work for me . I must say i Have to do the odd stock take to reaffirm i have a very nice boat sitting in there .


I will look at a couple of these systems to see if they are a better way to keep records etc
