Hi all,

I have come across some 1985 Seppelt GW Shiraz. I want to know the cellaring potential of such wine. Is it a drink now or will it keep for two more years?

TNs also greatly appreciated. $60 per bottle. If favourable comments, I'll get myself a 6 pack.

Here's a TN from a well-known Seppelt fanatic (no prize for guessing who*):

Seppelt Great Western Vineyard ?Hermitage? 1985
A museum release from the drives with a new style label. Red-Brown in colour. Wonderful aged characters that David identified as tomato leaf with blackcurrant on the nose. This was remarkably similar to the underlying fruit of the 1985 Show Sparkling. Fantastic flavours and rich balance, softened tannins before a wonderful long finish. Gorgeous and a wonderful aged red. David rated 91. Drink 2003-2008 Quality: 92/00 (Excellent) .

FWIW I thought the wine was a bit tired for my preferences when I tried it about 2 years ago.

I didn't think it was as high as $60, is that Seppelt GW CD price? They still had it on sale there a while back.

* It's obviously Murray, I didn't post a link to it as it contained a whole dinner report.

I haven't tried that one and only have the 97 and 98 (St. Peters) in hiding.

But has anyone tried the Victorian Shiraz 2001? I was well and truly amazed by the generosity of this wine, very plummy and rich with good traces of pepper and spice, the oak in balanced support. I think this 'un is going to go a good 5yrs for complexity and ten for longevity! Try some and cellar some, at $15 max. how can you loose?

I was looking up TORB's website and the 2001 Nobel One (375ml) at $20 per bottle was too good to be true.

I then looked at the Red Wine section and under Shiraz I saw the 1985 GW Shiraz at $60 per bottle.

The 2001 Victorian Premium Shiraz on the abovementioned website sells for $11 per bottle.

I might get another dozen each of 98 & 99 St Peters because I only have 1 bottle of 98 and 2 of the 99 left because its too yummy.

As for Seppelt, I really like the Rare fortified wines best.

I read through your Seppelt fortified TNs. Great notes. How about for this year. Compare the DP 63 Grand Muscat (750ml) to the GR 113 Rare Muscat (500ml)

I guess you have at least a 120 IQ from last night's National IQ test. I didn't do that well, probably from the Buller Rare Tokay I was sipping during the test.

Sorry if I'm getting your liver to work overtime. The Museum Release Buller Rare Tokay I had lastnight was a ripper. Those lingering finish - what can I say, there's no end to it.

Re last night's IQ test, I don't what the relevance is or if you are trying to insult me or not, but it was more than somewhat higher than 120 last time it was professionally tested and it's certainly high enough not to bother with commercial TV shows such as that.

Never trusted the IQ test. I know too many peole who have done well in them but don't seem to be able to carry it into everyday operations. I don't see how it can be carried out accurately over a transmission and it becomes, apparently, very dodgy over 140 anyway... So, I suppose Brian, your still okay at 120.

My apologies if I may have insulted you. My assumption didn't get me wrong stating that you have a 120+ IQ.

High IQ or not, I did it for the challenge (challenge myself in the privacy of my own den - slightly under the influence, of course). My wife was in the lounge occupying the big TV (cable).

What else can you do? This year I scored slightly less than 120 compared to last year score of 130+. Took the MENSA test and was confirmed to be in the high 130s.

I may have a high IQ but it didn't make me a high achiever. Probably motivation has a lot to say to my IQ. Retirement has a huge impact to my brain.

This will be my last post. I revert myself back to a 'lurker'.
It is nice talking to you all in this forum.
I have to reorganise my retirement investments for I know I have many more years ahead of me.

haven't tried the regular GW shiraz from 1985, but tried the Seppelts "Sparkling Burgundy" 1985 yesterday in the melbourne heat. (NOT the Show Sparkling) Worried at first when the cork eventually came out with no "pop" but turned out to be very good, with some bubbles still there, fully developed/secondary characters, leathery, with hints of tobacco & mushrooms - not a sweet wine at all. Interesting as to the division of fruit between this wine, the Show Sparkling and the GW shiraz from the same year?
