TN: Penfolds Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet 1998

I have banged on about this wine a bit over the last bit or so but having just secured another small load of it for a tidy, economic sum, I'm pleased to be sharing it's life for another little while. 1 bottle down, 6 to go.
Whilst I suspect there is the faintest of cork taint about this particular bottle, it must be relatively minor as the flavour is all there, all so familiar...
Dark purple red, the nose lifted with oak and inky liquorice and perhaps a touch of blackberry. The palate is even and balanced and full of flavour, some crushed ants and slightly alcohol warm, with a nice finish. This is very much a Penfolds style of wine circa 90s, honest and solid.
This is no stunner but once again, a relic of a long-lost age, when sub $15 corporate wines/labels could age very well indeed, still shining after nearly 10 years.
There are 1998 wines with far more bloated reputations (and prices) that are faltering when this little battler is still out there punching away.
'Nuff said.
