What's with Haselgrove?
What's with Haselgrove?
One Sydney retailer is flogging the 01 H series reds for $14.99 and now a national chain is flogging the 02 H series in stelvin for $17.99, plus a range of wines at the next two tiers down. I guess this means the H series is permanently demoted from $30 rrp to under $20 rrp. Their web site still has the 99 advertised at $30/btle though and I have seen posts about the 2000 being very cheap at CD.
Anyone else confused?

2001 "H" Series are at Kemenys for $14.99
They have a new "Limelight" wine that is placed above the "H".
They are going for a new look for marketing purposes - ie. change of labels.
The 2000 "H" Series are at the CD or telephone at a cheap price and are good value. Well the Shiraz is anyway. I have not tried the Cab. See the "what we liked area" for details and my tasting notes
That is all I know.

Since Gavin is too smart to deal with these guys whose marketing seems to be all over the place.
Kemenys for the 01 H @ 14.99
VC for the 02 several ranges in stelvin, I'll see if I can get a taste of the H reds there sometime this week.
New labels look pretty much like the old ones for the H series...

Ric,
They've been "in receivership" off and on since the early 90's, I remember getting 3-monthly phone calls from "a representative of the receiver" at one stage in the early 90's after I bought 1 case of a "Futures" Shiraz. I'm beginning to think it's a bit like those "closing down" sales that go on forever. Besides, I thought they had been taken over by Cranswick Estate? Here's Adairs post:

I'd be pretty peeved if I'd bought any at full price.

Brian,
It doesnt look that simple. If you examime the Evans and Tate latest Annual Report http://www.etw.com.au/one/pdf/Annual_Report%20_Final2003.pdf?windowurl=pdf/2003Annual_Report.pdf they state "2003 Conscious of opportunities in the export markets for value driven products, in March 2003 the Evans & Tate Wine Group acquired the key production infrastructure and export brand assets of Cranswick premium Wines Limited.
Cranswick Premium Wines increased the Evans & Tate Wine GroupÂ’s crush capacity to 50,000 tonnes. The Evans & Tate Wine GroupÂ’s brand portfolio now includes the high profile brands of Barramundi and Salisbury selling in the UK and Europe. Cranswick Premium Wines (Europe) Ltd (to be renamed Evans & Tate Wine Group (Europe) Ltd) provides sales and marketing services throughout the UK and Europe servicing supermarkets and retail chains as well as independent retailers and the on-trade
(comprising restaurants and cafes and other on-premise consumption options). Along with its extensive range of branded products the Evans & Tate Wine Group supplies a large portfolio of exclusive labels including Cedar Creek, Aldridge Estate and Bondi Blue to major retailing groups throughout UK, Europe, Asia and the Pacific.
Notice in all of this there is no Haselgrove.
Also missing form the E & T site and Annual Report (that I can see) is any wine making facilities or vineyards in McLaren Vale.

Anthony wrote:Ric, Cranswick sold off Haselgrove to the Barrington Wine Group before the E&t merger. Barrington went belly up and Mt Avoca (sold back to the Barry family) and Haselgrove was sold off.

Thanks for the clarification Ant, but two questions.
Whose on first?
and
Whose paying the rent?
Don't know who owns it know. I remember when Cranswick bought it and they flew over half of the Melbourne Wine Trade for the launch of the new winery and new wines (called Bent Wing from Wrattonbully) and just thinking why the hell Nick Haselgrove would sell out to a Riverina based bulk producer. Good way to ruin a great winery. very quickly.
Good wine ruins the purse; bad wine ruins the stomach

i believe the bank 'acquired' the assets of haselgrove in the winding up. Each of barringtons separate winery businesses went in different directions. Mt Avoca, also there was a barrington winery in the hunter - name escapes me (was its name barringtons?). And hayshed Hill in margaret river went to the awl group.

Sorry Paul, no notes on the 2001 but I wanted to say that I liked your dog picture better!
Re: the "H" - if you are keen to get on the 2001 at Kemeny's, I suggest you don't get too excited. Most of their best fruit will be going into their new limelight flagship. I would like to read an impression though as well.
Kind regards,
Adair
