I've held to the belief for a while now that wine shouldn't have bubbles,
but having tried a sparkling shiraz as part of a degustation dinner recently I've decided it's time I got over that.

I'm looking for recommendations on good value for money bottles to give a try.
Ideally in the uder $20 bracket, but then if the 'V' is good I'm happy to spend the 'M' and go higher

If you are in Canberra, take a drive on the weekend out to the cellar doors for Gallaghers and for Jeir Creek (not far from each other, in the Murrumbateman area). If you want to learn about red bubbles, try some, and maybe have a look at how a tirage bottling set up works, chat to Greg Gallagher. The Jeir Creek bubbles this time isn't as good as the last release, but worth a look for how different approaches to local fruit, aging and blending work with red bubbles.

I'll definitely have to give the cellar doors a try. Particularly as I haven't been out to either before.

Don't overlook the garden variety Seppelts - Can be had for good prices at the right times. I'm drinking th 98 right now, very tasty.

** Anyone know where I can get the SOSS under crown seal, on the cheap (i.e. < $15/bottle). Either in Brisbane, or by mail-order? I'm a big fan, but haven't been able to find it lately. I'm kicking myself for not stocking up when I had the chance.

The 2004 is still around at $14.99 (2005 $13.99 or even less on special), but not in crown seal, that seems to be commanding a $2 premium...

** Do the grocers stock it still? If so, they might be willing to order it in with crown seal at the same price as cork. Would be worth a shot, I suppose.

I'd suggest you avoid one called 'Black Chook'. Had one a couple of weeks ago and it was not very nice, in fact it was so badly received at a tasting, the retailer sent all his stocks back.

I would agree with this. I got some NV Black Chook for $11.99USD and there was no value there at all. Very much a tarry, burnt offering that lacked both balance and structure. I
