I know im VERY new here but I thought I would add a suggestion that you might consider looking into.

You all have great tasting notes on wines, and you all post and discuss your thoughts. Have you concidered setting up a Wiki page that can be updated by the users so that Any wine that gets notes or mentioned can have its own section. This enabling anyone wanting to know something about a particular wine can find it listed very easily, and see all the notes from various people (posted from within these forum pages) all listed in one spot!

For instance, if we had a Wiki article for: Rockford Rifle Range 2004
All of your tasting notes could be listed in here. I know lots of you tried it as I dug through the forums to find what you thought of it. The article could be structured as a simple cut and paste from the forums

Code: Select all

2004 Rockford Rifle Range Cab Sav - very full, rich Barossan style of cab. Lots of plums, cherries and blackberries with notes of licorice and dried leaf. The high alcohol is evident but does not feel out of place. Softish tannins carry through the finish. This is not a wine to sit and contemplate but to enjoy its generousity of flavour.

2004 Rifle Range Cab Sav: full bodied palate which coats the mouth. Splash of ripe blackcurrant fruit with hints of dried leaves, tobacco and cedar running through the ripe fruit. Soft tannins round the wine off. Its a plush, warm, full Cabernet - like Barossa cab should be.

2004 Rockford Rifle Range Cabernet Sauvignon (Barossa) Love the retro-style bottle. Rich ripe, Barossa fruit-cake style, subtle oak. Tastes older than 04 – lovely wine in a slightly old-fashioned style. Be better in three years.

And thats just a sample within a limited time

Do you see what I mean or do I need to create a better example some how?

What do you all think?

Scoobth,

Your example is clear and I guess quite a few people know what a wiki is, but unless you or someone else are volunteering to do most of the the work for Gavin (the Board owner) and solve any technical issues of fitting it into the forum software I'm pretty sure it isn't going to happen.

For those that don't know, Gavin is a relatively small-scale wine e-tailer and this forum already costs him as much time and money as he can afford, so any good ideas probably need to either fit into the capabilities of the forum software or come with an offer of assistance due to your own skills and experience.

In the meantime, you can use the Search facility to dig out comparative notes on the same wine.

I will certainly consider what you are suggesting and see how easy I can make it for him to set up.

The idea of the wiki is not the site owner to input the data, but for everyone to help contribute and organise it. Freely to be edited by any members of the forum.

I will have a look and see if there is an easy wiki that can sit next to a phpbb forum. Having said that I could possibly just set up an individual wiki on a seperate hosting, but that wouldnt be as clean and the owner wouldnt have complete control over it then so its probably a last resort.

Yet another site to post TN's on. Cellar tracker allows you to keep inventory, and as you drink add your note... simple.

I don't see any value adding by making a system for this community, not to mention this isn't the only wine community on the web.

Most people I have spoken to use CT.
