1994 St Hallet Old Block Shiraz

:? :? :? I just don't know how I feel about this wine.

It seems to have all the goods. A pleasant nose of leather, charred meats, heaps of white pepper, licorice, pencil shavings and dark fruits. Subtle and not overpowering. A smooth wine that has mellowed with age. Plenty of flavoursome fruits and savoury nuiances. A reasonable length aftertaste and dusty tannins. I did like this wine, but I found it boring, lacking soul or personality. A clinical flavour. Maybe I am being too harsh, but I feel like I will forget this wine within the next 10 minutes. 88 pts

Anyone else ever had that feeling when drinking a good wine ?

If this is how the Old Blocks age, I am getting stuck into my 98's and 99's that I have keeping for a while, in case they go down the same path. I still think the 1998 was the best vintage with the Old Blocks by a mile. Much better use of quality oak.

Regularly; just because a wine is "good" does not men it will rock your boat.

Drinking old red wine is far removed from young in your face numbers. Please don't expect the same "wow" factor from old wines - you need time to savour the complexities, contemplate and have them creep up on you. Patience is a vurtue...

Welcome to the forum ICRed. Love the handle; much more "betterer" than IC c-through! :P

You are right about older wines, they tend to be subtle and you need to think about the nuances and subtle complexities. In many ways, those can be as, if not more enjoyable, than the young, in your face, wow stuff.

I find the same applies to ladies!
