Salitage 2001 Pinot Noir
Salitage 2001 Pinot Noir
This wine is simply amazing. Consumed this alongside a 2000 Paliser estate with a duck/mushroom soup..sensational. Nose has smoky bacon, truffles (real truffle smell for those that have smelt real truffles..not truffle oil...) with earth undergrothy funky smells. A lean palate with just enough flesh on the backbone.Nice long finish..superb wine.Well done Salitage.

I would be interested to see how the Salitage drinks in a year or two. My previous experience is that they 'fall over' badly and rapidly.
The Palliser 2000 I have tried a couple of times and find it a bit hot with the alchohol and clumsy cf to the better Kiwi stuff.
Although at the price of early 30s Aus it is great value for a pinot in the modern world.

Thanks for the reply michel. I too find most aussie pinots fall over really fast which is frustrating..even some of the better more expensive pinots dont age well. The Salitage might be a little thin on the fruit to last but it is drinking so well now it still good value.
I'm still a learner when it comes to wine and appreciate all feedback a great deal. I have learnt a lot from reading the posts of members here and i again thank those who have replied.
Cheers

Gday Paul
I drink a lot of Salitage and concur with your comments. The big improvement with the 01, over prevoius vintages, the structure. It was defined and I feel that with time the 01 will develop more palate weight because of this.
The 00 Salitage my regular quaffer in Bahrain. Invariably, the next day's leftovers after a night in the fridge, develop complexity and fruit weight.
This leads me to believe the 01 may be a good mid term cellaring prospect-a scarcity for New World pinot.
I have always enjoyed Palliser Estate. Visited the winery on travels and always tend toward the wine at restaurants abroad (where it crops up frequently). Prefer the wine in youth, as I agree with the above the warmth clumbsy when the fruit and oak settles.
