Hi all as you can guess from the thread title I don't know very much about wines at all.

I have someone coming from over east to WA and I've been told she likes a "nice white wine". So I was looking to get her a bottle or two as a gift. Could any of you recommend from the (not) very detailed description of her likes any wines that fit the bill.

I have had a quick look around the forum but couldn't find much to help. Any help, recommendations or advice you could offer would be appreciated.

I am very fond of the 04 Voyager Estate chardonnay. Around $30 a bottle on special by the dozen. might be closer to $40 if you're just buying a couple of bottles normal retail. Fantastic white though.

You haven't mentioned a price range though. This could help people with appropriate suggestions.

As for price range, up to around $100 for say 2 different wines is what I was thinking of so yours fits into that range nicely.

I don't think you could go wrong with any of the following chardonnays:
Voyager Estate
Woodlands "Chloe" Reserve
Devils Lair
Pierro
Leeuwin Estate Art Series
Cullen
Moss Wood

Plenty of others as well including the new Evans & Tate single vineyard which should be interesting.

Just mix and match between these for the price that suits.

Hi Jez,

Many many good options here, most of which would cost considerably less than $100 for two. I would say many of the Rieslings from Mount Barker, Denmark or Porungorup areas are excellent and generally in the $15-25 range. Examples might be Plantagenet, Gilberts, Castle Rock, Forest Hill, Frankland Estate, Alkoomi (also have good semillon et al at a premium price level). Leo Buring also does a Mount Barker riesling which is reputed to be good for ~$30 although I have not tried it (try searching for tasting notes on this forum). If you must go chardonnay, the big two here usually mentioned are Leeuwin Estate Art Series at ~$80-90 (for me a bit fat, oaky and blowsy) and Pierro at ~$60-65 I think (more tightly would, lean and minerally). Picardy might also be worth a look as well for Chardonnay. Lots of others not on this list too, but I guess there's enough here to be going on with!

Everybody should do themselves a favour and try the 2005 Picardy Chardonnay... outstanding stuff.

If your budget allows the Leeuwin Chardonnay is almost without peer. At the other end of the market there is the Houghtons White Burgundy - a perennial favourite.
