I just had a bottle of 2000 Jack Mann last night and saw JO’s score of a mere 86/100 in his compendium. I don’t usually harp on critics opinions because my own is the most important. Also think JO is “usually†not too far off the mark anyway, but this is by far the biggest difference in opinion to a wine I have ever experienced.
From the luscious smells wafting into the decanter to the last drop that nearly brought a tear my eye, it was absolutely gorgeous. The fruit power/balance intermingled magnificently with some of the best oak to make this an extremely complete wine in every respect. It’s funny because I had a bottle of 98 Wolf Blass Black Label late last year and have to compare these two as fairly similar styles (JM fuller though). I would say though that the black label was ready to go drinking, where as the extra body of Jack M would see it emerge for another 5 + years. Great power but balance at its best. 95/100 moving upwards IMO.
Very interested to hear other views on this wine.
Jack Mann 2000. JO 86/100 ????
Cheers for that. Experience was obviously very close to yours. I guess JO had a bad bottle (variation maybe) or it has gained more momentum than he first thought.
Either way I’m definitely buying more as well as trying the vintages he did mark well. Wow if that is an 86 bottle, cant wait to try a 95……
