New Wine Maps tool.

Auswiners planning a tour should check out the new site at http://www.australianwineregions.com showing wineries in most Aussie regions.

The maps are powered by Google, you can see a map, a satellite image or both superimposed.

The site is still collecting data so the coverage is a bit patchy. Wineries can register and enter their details for inclusion. Our Smithy is one of the leaders in getting himself on the map.

It's a great tool, for planning your next wine trip, or just tooling around on the net.

Cheers

This will end up being great, but the coverage is VERY patchy right now...

As I say though, this will end up being great... a very convenient way of planning an afternoon/day/week of touring wineries!

Hey guys,

I'm one of the creators of the site. The site is starting to get better with coverage. We are almost at our 300th winery submission. Bundles more to go, but more submissions, or updates where applicable are most appreciated.

Cheers,
Matt H

I agree. It will be great when more wineries are listed.

One problem I found. If you select the Hunter Valley the map positions you at Glen Innes.

Yes this looks good already and once it's got more wineries it should be excellent but the accuracy is a problem once you zoom in. Not sure how they get the location for pinning their flags on the map.

Only had a quick look at Coonawarra and here's what's inaccurate there -

Holllicks is on the the next road north (Racecourse Road).

Majella is the next road south

Katnook is about another kilometre or two south

Penley is the next road north

Rymill is about a kilometre north

Matt H you might like to correct those?

Mind you, a map is hardly necessary in Coonawarra, nearly twenty cellar doors in just fifteen kilometres along just the one straight road ! But if you were going to navigate by these in other areas and they are as inaccurate as Coonawarra you may take a wrong turn or two!

Yeah, I noticed some of those. The Rymill one is easy to spot if you go to the satellite version rather than just the map version. ... drive along the driveway off the highway, turn right, turn right again and drive back towards the highway & the cellar door (and that bloody big horse statue!)

Hey 707 and Danny,

Coonawarra is a bit of a problem because they have no street numbers in that shire or something. Street numbers really help. I'll have a look and see what's easily resolveable, but might have to PM you to get more info. Thanks for flagging them though.

Where possible, we've been writing to wineries to validate entries. There's been some excellent co-operation from the Heathcote region and they are looking good. Despite average satellite imagery, having a human at the other end really helped!

Also if anyone is from the Mildura/Murray Darling region, we really need some help here to get some wineries in. A lot of local knowledge is required to locate them on satellite images and it's trick without having been there.

Please keep the feedback coming. We greatly appreciate it.

Matt, much closer. I've pm'd you with my e-mail address if you need more info but here's a few more to go on with.

Using the most zoomed in view available and working from the South

(D) is now reopened as the Fosters Wine Group cellar door called Coonawarra Wine Gallery. It handles Lindemans, Mildara, Robertsons Well, Jamiesons Run, Penfolds Bin 128!

Parker Estate is the next driveway north of (D), 100m west of the N-S bitumen

(A) Hollick is much better, they are actually the white building just below the flag

Patrick T is a new cellar door 100m West of hollick in the nw corner of the crossroad

Balnaves is 200m north of (A) Hollick

Further north just before the kink in the N-S bitumen is Bowen Estate on the left (east) and across the bitumen from Bowen just as the kink starts is Leconfield on the right (west)

(C) Katnook is now correct

(E) Majella is the building 200m NE of the flag

(B) Jamiesons is now closed so delete that

(I) flag is actually on the DiGiorgio winery so that needs the name changed

Zema (currently (I) is the building 100m South

The white blob (building) about 200m north of the (I) flag is Brands

100m North of Brands is Redman

(F) Penley is now closer to correct - the green dot in the kink of the driveway 400-500m SW is the cellar door

(G) Rymill is now correct

Thanks Matt

I'd love to charge you for access, but then Google would charge me!

Hey Steve,

Because this stuff is dead accurate, we'll need to improve the update utility a bit to have a 'cross hair' to pinpoint the location. This could take a few days to get right, then we can get Coonawarra perfect! Will email you. Thanks again for your due diligence.

Coonawarra has been updated a bit.

For those interested in submitting their wineries, there's now a 'crosshair' on the add an update a winery screens so you can pinpoint your location exactly.
