Morris Wines took out the top award at the Victorian Wines Show.

The Rutherglen region wine-maker won the Most Successful Exhibitor trophy from 1,100 exhibits of Victorian wines at an awards presentation in Puckapunyal.

The top award, the Colin J Richardson Trophy, is named after a key founder of the Victorian Wines Show.

Chairman of judges and acclaimed wine writer James Halliday praised the quality of all 15 trophy winners, particularly the riesling from cooler areas that won three top gold medals.

"There is terrific contrast in the shiraz classes from region to region of the state and pinot noir showed very well," Mr Halliday said.

Other winners were:

*Best sparkling wine: Yering Station-Pinot/Chardonnay 1998.

*Best sweet white table wine: Brown Brothers-Patricia Noble Riesling 2002.

*Best non-wood-matured table white wine: Knights Granite Hills Riesling 2003.

*Best wood-matured white table wine: De Bortolli Wines, Chardonnay 2002.

*Best white table wine: De Bortoli Wines-Chardonnay 2002.

*Best Pinot Noir: Paringa Estate-Pinot Noir 2002.

*Best varietal or blended red table wine: Warrabilla Wines-Durif 2002.

*Best Shiraz: Yering Station-Reserve Shiraz Viognier 2002.

*Best Cabernet Sauvignon: Maygars Hill-Cabernet Sauvignon 2002.

*Best red table wine: Yering Station-Reserve Shiraz Viognier 2002.

*Best fortified dessert wine: Morris Wines-Old Premium Liquor Muscat N.V.

*Best amateur red grape wine: Mr Paul Geddes-Vintage Port Shiraz/Touriga 2002.

*Best non-grape wine fortified: Mr Steve Bahlen-Cherry.

*Most Successful amateur exhibitor: Carinci-Moor.
