TN Sergio Carlei wines

A few notes on the wines of Sergio Carlei from a tasting at MG Garage in Sydney.
Sergio produces wines under two labels "The Green Vineyards" and "Carlei Estate" and is a passionate producer of bloody good biodynamic and organically produced wines. Being from good Italian background, he started making wine with his grandfather at a young age and went on from there. He's a lovely bloke with a great passion for natural winemaking, and I recommend you search out his wines as they are fantastic.
2001 Carlei Tre Bianchi
A blend of Sauvignon Blanc 80%, Semillon 15% and Chardonnay 5%. Very european, slatey, minerally and nutty. A bit of white peach, and savoury hints on the palate. Lovely fruit purity and elegant mouthfeel.
2001 Green Vineyards Chardonnay
A difficult vintage, cool with rain at harvest. Stone and citrus fruit characters with a hint of vanilla. Quite tightly structured on he palate with citrus fruit, apple and stone fruit characters. A touch of sulphides in there as well.
2002 Green Vineyards Chardonnay
A perfect vintage.....white peach and stone fruit characters, great purity of fruit, multi layered with great balance and persistance on the finish. Highly Recommended
2001 Carlei Chardonnay
Citrus, peaches, oatmeal and nuts on the nose with hints of butterscotch.These flavours carry on to the palate with some fig and melon characters thrown in there as well. Lovely creamy mouthfeel, great length.
2002 Carlei Charonnay
Fantastic pure ripe fruit showing peach, melon, butterscotch and fig characters. Tiny yeilds .5 T/acre. Great mouthwatering intensity of fruit on the palate....bloody good wine!
2001 Green Vineyards Pinot Noir
These vines were only planted in the Cardinia range in 1998 and grown biodynamicaly. Very impressive wine for such young vines. Black cherry, bramble characters on the nose and palate with an excellent tannin structure
2002 Green Vineyards Pinot Noir
Barrel Sample: Red/Sour cherry characters with hints of cinnamon, nice depth of fruit and complexity.
2002 Carlei Estate Pinot Noir
Barrel Sample: Dark fruits and black cherry characters, sweeter fruit and more concentration than the previous pinot's.Excellent balance. Highly Recommended.
2001 Green Vineyards Heathcote Shiraz
Dry grown, low cropping 1 T/Acre, vines grown organically since 1958. Powerful and rich in flavour, multi-layered and very perfumed with dark fruit, plums, white pepper and some savoury hints and aniseed characters.
Long velvety finish and very highly recommended!
2000 Green Vineyards Bendigo Biodynamic Shiraz
Dark brooding fruit...stacked with multi-layered, earthy cherry and dark fruit characters. Wicked ripe tannin structure a fantastic wine!! Long, long finish this wine will cellar magnificently. Outstanding!
2000 Carlei Estate Tre Rossi
A blend of Shiraz 85%, Marzemino 10% and Nebbiolo 5%. Spicy, plummy shiraz fruit with some earthy, savoury characters on the palate. Lovely wine with a nice long finish.
2001 Carlei Estate Tre Rossi
Juicy fruit with plums,dark berry fruit, roses and meaty, earthy overtones.
The flavours multiply on the palate and the wine finished long and well balanced. Good stuff...
2002 Carlei Estate Heathcote Shiraz
Barrel sample....this wine is going to be awesome...dark, brooding and saturated with super-ripe dark, spicy fruit. Very intense...I'd keep your eye's peeled for this wine when it's released. Outstanding!!
