Folks

Its been a while since the last Perth offline, more so for me because I unfortunately missed the last one! Given that it is October already and Christmas is rapidly approaching, who is interested in one more offline before the end of the year? I am happy to be organiser for this one so if you would like to make some suggestions on potential dates and venues I will get things moving.

I have come across a restaurant called Blakes, which is on Blake street North Perth, it is BYO and the food is good at a reasonable price... Just a thought.

Yep, count me/us in depending on dates.

What dates would suit you both best? Pretty much any date except next Sunday would suit me. Thanks for the tip on Blakes Peter, haven't tried that one myself. I will call and see what sort of glassware they have

Somewhere will be a staff xmas dinner but I am waiting for them to tell me their favoured date.

We are just starting to get into that time of the year again, but at the moment the 18th, 23rd and 25th of this month are out.

Blakes are unlikely to have any decent glassware, but I may be able to help out there if needed. I would also avoid booking on a Friday or Saturday because they have a jazz band (not good for conversation) and getting a booking can be difficult on those nights.

Well if we make it mid-week that will make booking and organising easier for sure. I am certainly happy with a mid-week date and can make pretty much any mid-week date at the moment except 29th (Qantas Wine Show). How about we aim at this stage for Wednesday 5th November? That gives us 3 weeks to organise and is still far enough away from the silly season to avoid too many conflicts.

I can also help out with some glassware, depending on how many people we get, I guess we only really need one good glass each. Speaking of how many people, so far we only have the 4 of us...David and Duncan are you interested?

All you Perth lurkers out there put your hands up! If you have never been to an offline, now is your chance. I went to my first one only about a year ago and it was a great evening, fantastic wine and food and I learned a hell of a lot about wine in just one night. And everyone is so friendly you feel right at home. So come on, now is your chance to come out of hiding.

Wednesday the 5th sounds good to me, I will ask the boss as well, although she has always been able to find an excuse up until now.

I think that I can cover the glassware, but I only have a couple of decanters... lets see how many people before I make any rash promises.

As Paul has said, the more the better. There is usually a good range of people who attend, with varying amounts of wine experience from the absolute novice to experts, the wines brought along vary in styles, age and cost, all of which are welcomed.

Why not give an offline a go.

Okay lets officially set the date at Wed 5th November, pending approval from the bosses. I can help out in the glassware dept with a couple of decanters and perhaps 4 glasses (2 Riedel, 2 Speiglau). I will wait until we have some confirmations on the date before calling Blakes.

The 5th sounds good, no suprises the boss will not be able to make it and there is an outside chance that I may have to go overseas on business at short notice.

As far as glassware is concerned, I could probably cover up to 16 people with red and white glasses, so I think that we should have it covered between us.

Good one Justin, welcome to the fray, I am sure you will enjoy it. Peter I think you should well and truly have everyone covered for glassware, thanks for that, I doubt we will get 16 people. I will make a booking this weekend at Blakes and speak to them about glassware and if they are happy for us to provide our own.

Blakes are not open for dinner on Wednesdays, only Friday and Saturday. Would anyone like to offer an alternative? There is always the Witch's Cauldron...I will try to come up with a couple of ideas tonight.

Witch's is good, as is Jacques up the road. We had our last offline there with Ric and the food and service and glassware are excellent. Also excellent is Le Paris Brest in Kalamunda but it may be a bit far out for some of you guys.

I would second Jacques, which is a top restaurant. The Witches Cauldron would not allow BYO last time I tried (maybe because it was at the weekend) although we had an offline there some time ago and were well looked after.

A bit of a shame about Blakes, I was there last night for a Moroccan evening and the food and service was excellent, although the music made conversation difficult at times.

We have 7 starters so far, I will book for 7:30pm if that's okay with everyone.

Jacques is booked for 7:30 on Wed 5th November. Would anyone like to propose a theme or some kind of logic to the wine selection, or are we all happy to go with whatever people bring?

It is now 5 years since the vintage of the millenium, 1998. Why not see how they are going? Or if you want something a little older why not the second best vintage of the millenium, 1996?

I would register on the members list with an email address though, as it probably will make it easier for Paul S to make contact with the details of the venue etc.
