I get to open and taste alot of grange, and personally I'm surprised they don't list 1989 as a top vintage. It has consistantly been the best drinking vintage i've been privy too for the last two-three years. Don't get me wrong, '90 + '86 are are brilliant wines, however in comparison they're still very tight and have alotta of time and development still to occur imo.
Another standout vintage in terms of drinking to its full potential is the '95 vintage which i've seen a strange abundance of lately, alot of people think this vintage was horrible however, its showing very well currently.

I've had 89 a few times, and I suspect because it's somewhat stylistically different it gets marked down. It's an enjoyable drink, but not a typical Grange, hence thegenerally low regard, I suspect.

I'm with Graeme...the '89 is a lovely wine but in context IMO it shouldn't be listed in the top vintages.
Platinum....the 2002 looks fantastic at this stage

Interesting what you say about the 95 vintage of Grange, Invertiga. I was at the Penfolds cellar door in the week before the '90 grange was released. As a result I got a big heads up on the '90 Vintage and managed to score a dozen at ony $120 each before the frenzy and subsequent stupid prices forever.
But more interestingly they were really talking up the quality of the '95 vintage Grange as they were just getting the grapes in and saying it looked absolutely fantastic. So I have been waiting for the good reports on the '95 vintage but none really ever came. I've been tempted to buy some at Auction to check for myself as the prices aren't too outrageous, due to the perception of a bad vintage.

In regards to the 1995 Grange Jeremy Oliver's first rating has been increased out to 95 and his drinking window out from a start of 1997 in a earlier edition to I think 2015 in the 2006 edition.
So this vintage must be doing something.
I have tried it about four times and quite liked.
I have a few bottles in my cellar but are yet to open any.
