1998 Seppelts Great Western Shiraz

Post by Paul T »

Great wine. Came home from work tonight to find my wife had cracked a bottle which certainly beat the quaffers i'd brought home. Lovely spicy nose, quite peppery with a sensational palate of cherries, nice balanced use of oak and great length. An absolute bargain at $40. All $40 wine should be this good...sadly it isn't.

Highly recommended.

Isn't it called the St Peters, not Great western shiraz anymore?

I think there's a GW Reserve Shiraz which is more expensive than St Peters...I haven't seen it around much though.

Anthony,
there was a st peters and reserve in 1998. However, a decision has been made on the 'reserve' and they will not produce another.

cheers

Sorry guys..it was the St Peters..i was a bit tired when i typed the post..Byron Bay is busier than bloody Bondi these days and working in the bottlo is full on to say the least some days.

Again..great wine.I wish all $40 bottles were this good.

Had the 1998 Reserve last night. Still purple/ black colour, no pepper or cherries on nose, more blackberry/plummy with a heap of vanillan french oak. This is seriously a big structured wine with superb length on the palate lots of primary fruit kept tightly wound by the oak.

needs at least 5 years sleep before trying again but probably won't be at its peak for another 10 years at the earliest.

Cheers

Paul
