TN: 1998 Jamiesons Run Alexander's Block

1998 Jamiesons Run Alexander's Block Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon: There’s a small amount of chunky crust, so the breatheasy decant was a very good move. Dark to inky red/crimson. Absolutely gorgeous, textbook Coonawarra at its finest with ripe, cassis fruit matched by spicy/malty oak, iodine, herbs, very sweet cedar, chalk/pencil notes and the slightest hint of aniseed and VA. Likewise the palate hasn’t missed a beat, opening with a salvo of chalky tannin that runs right through the palate resulting in superb structure and length. Ripe/tangy mulberry/cassis fruit and mint, maybe ever so slightly jammy but absolutely no alcohol heat (13%), finishing quite exotic, long and meaty with some iodine and pencil notes with breathing. This was a standout when it was released, and it’s just getting better with a long way to go; the current $17-20 auction price is an absolute joke for the quality.

I tasted the 02 Odeas Block a few weeks back and thought it was a joke at $23 as well. What a great overall wine with great travelling potential. I have emailed the company (no reply) as to where to by this in Perth. I can’t find it online either so if anybody knows???

Have had a few of these over the past 6 months and thought they were sensational. Very mulberry, and creamy. Another joke at $20 @ auction

I know where there are some of the 98 that have been well cellared if anyone wants that particular vintage. Only problem is they are at the original release price about $35.
You may be better off getting the current releases at around $20??? (edit - I should read the original posts more carefully instead of skimming - obviously you are better off getting them at auction)

Jamieson's Run seems to be in good form with their mid to upper range wines. I see Halliday rated a couple of their premiums quite highly and they are all available at heavily discounted prices.
Only glitch was that first release of the base range varietals that seemed to have some very significant batch variation.
