Was gifted a glass of this by someone at another table in a restaurant! How fortunate! What immediately struck me about this wine was just how different in structure it is to most Oz reds. It would be very easy to miss the beauty of the wine because it just isn't as "obvious" as most of the wines that I generally drink. By that I mean there is a great difference between this and the fruit driven styles that I have been bought up on,and at first glance I nearly didn't get this wine at all.
When I got into it more,I began to understand what all the fuss is about with great Bordeaux in great vintages. There is a lot going on in the glass, the wine changes right in front of you. First hints of cedar, smoke and dried herbs. Then when it opens up properly, intense tobacco leaf,fennel,aniseed/liquorice with the herbs still there in the background. In the mouth it has silky, drying but very fine tannins, secondary plummish fruit and wonderful length, and it is what I would describe as "linear" in relation to length, because it just keeps going in a straight line, very little divergence. Very enjoyable,if only I had the front of Oliver Twist....
"Please sir,can I have some more" !!!
Cheers

Neville,
It was actually in the Hunter at Blaxlands restaurant, not BYO. The person who bought the wine had connections!
As an aside, the food there was very honest and worth a try if you are up that way,and the prices are also most reasonable.
Cheers
