strange cork residue

I recently opened a bottle of Pegasus Bay 2002 Pinot Noir (not an Australian wine I know but anyway...) And found on the bottom of the cork what appeared to be sugar crystals. Little roughly square whitish deposits. Is this a common thing to find? I've certainly not noticed it before. And is it sugar or something else?
The wine certainly wasn't affected, in fact it was a wonderfull drop. If anyone has tried it I'd like to hear what you thought.
