1997 Giaconda Cabernet

Opened last night with the folks with roast beef with all the trimmings.

No notes taken, just a few (notable) impressions of this fine wine.

Decided to decant and was amazed at the extraordinary cassis and floral scents that "filled the room". This nuance diminished, slowly but surely, over the course of the evening (about 4 hours), allowing some classy savoury oak, cedar and traces of herb to emerge. Medium-bodied, this wine needs at least 3 or 4 years before re-opening. The palate reveals excellent potential with plenty of blackcurrant fruit and savoury oak, very good acidity and fine-grained tannins, but yet to fully integrate. I predict it will become silkier and quite moorish once it comes together.

Postscript - 16/09/03 - having polished off the dregs this evening, I feel even more confident about the prospects of this wine - still perfumed nose with little or no decay, the palate offers up more plum, cigar box and herb in addition to the flavours mentioned above. Much better integration of the structural components, as well. Good juice, indeed :!:
