Just a brief post with memory notes of a memorable evening.
Lindemans 1984 Hunter River Chablis Bin 6475
Label/level/cork in perfect condition. Deep colour, phenomenal nose of acacia, lemon toast, honeyed nuts and fresh citrus. Classic aged Hunter Semillon. Palate runs a close second with the only criticism being a slight shortness in the finish. Otherwise brilliant.
Frederic Esmonin 1990 Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru
Excellent medium red colour. Understated nose and palate to die for. Sappy, strawberry and cherry fruit with umpteen different nuances, too numerous to mention at this hour and my current state of well-being. Elegance and complexity personified. Outstanding. No evidence of cooked fruit here whatsoever. 13.5% with no obvious chaptalization.
Robert Arnoux 1995 Les Suchots 1er Cru Vosne-Romanee
My second bottle in a week. Marvellous wine in its own right. Just needs 5-10 years to show its best. Much heavier extraction and lots more new oak than the above. This should be reclassified as a Grand Cru IMHO. Excellent. Thankfully have more to look forward to.
Mount Mary 1985 Cabernets
This would spook most left bank second growths and give most of the first growths a run for their money from the same year. Absolutely outstanding and amazingly fresh, with some time to go. No hurry to drink. John Middleton, you are to be congratulated. One of the best Cabernet blends this country has ever produced. A/V 12%
Wynn's 1990 Michael Shiraz
I have tried this wine 3 times in the last 12 months. This bottle revealed a huge gobful of tarry blackberry fruit and US oak (totally unready) and a big, earthy, minty, vaniilin, fruitcake nose. None of us picked it as a Coonawarra, although we all picked it as a Shiraz. If this bottle is representative I'd say it needs 5-10 years to be at its best. Still very impressive for a 1990. Excellent.
