Give me a few hours; I have just cracked a bottle and want to let it breath.

Just been released and has an RRP at CD of $60, which is the same as the last vintage.

Saltram No 1 2002 Barossa Shiraz Sept 05

Sealed in Stelvin; and whilst show awards normally don't impress me, when you see 8 gold medals from major shows, including one from the NWS, and 3 trophies from the Perth show, the awards are no accident. The bouquet is intensely black, rich and ripe; a touch of pepper, blackberry, Barossa chocolate and smoky vanillin oak. One sip and the old taste buds stand to attention faster than a Grenadier Guard. It maintains the precision of a Grenadier Guard as it sits beautifully, and completely fills the mouth with concentrated, intense flavours that belies its ample-weight, finishing with wonderful persistence and length. Its intensely (but perfectly) ripe holding a terrific balance between savoury and sweet flavours, showing blackberry, smoky oak, dark chocolate and spice. Precision winemaking at play here; this is the best young No1 I have tried and whilst the oak is noticeable, they have backed off on the oak regime and the wine is better for it. Tannins are very fine, the fruit deep and intense. Rated as Excellent with *** for value; although this is scrumptious now, it will get better - a lot better. Its a class act!

I've had it too. My notes, and keep in mind I don't like this style:

Burnt toffee, coconut and caramel nose. Silky mouthfeel, lovely frit in the ripe but not overripe style. A very big wine: dark chocolate, toffee, spice, plums. Power and balance. Should keep for an eternity. While the oak overshadows the fruit just a bit for now, this is a good wine. 92/100

Its not even up on the Saltram website, they still have the 2001.

It's listed at a couple if sites, probably no hurry, there is plenty of 01 around so 2002 may be slow to emerge. PM me if you are desperate to try a bottle.

I picked up 4 bottles of the 2002 at Dan Murphy's last week on special for $50 a bottle. I wanted a six pack but they only had 4 left. This was at Pennant Hills in North Western Sydney. You could try other stores in Sydney.

True indeed, now available at the Australian Wine centre, and its terrific i think.

Some earlier vintages I found over oaked, this one has terrific balance, lovely young, intense Barossa Shiraz.

Apparently its just been released this month and being West Australian, we'll probably get it a little later than everyone else. I had the pleasure of trying the '01 which knocked my socks off. A truly superb wine and one of the best widely-available shiraz wines in Australia.

IMO, the 02 is way better than the 01!

This is yet another label that could do with backing off the oak and looks like they have, the fruits too good to mask with wood.

I wonder if other big oak styles like E&E Black Pepper will have less wood too?

DM's in Adelaide just had it for $48.50 ea...got myself 3 bottles.

Had the 2002 No1 and the 2002 Octavius over the weekend. The No1 is a very very good wine, the Octavius was better, fantastic in fact.

Ric, if only work didn't get in the way of one's social pleasures quite so often, just don't get the opportunities to post more 'regularily'. Enjoy reading the other posts when I can though.

Had my first of this tonight and loved it.

Mine was with cork and not Stelvin however... Have they done a double version of it?

When it improves further Ric is it good enough for ***** for value?

Is it clearly better than 02 Mamre Shiraz?

I like Metala Black. Is this as good?

Its better than the last Metala Black I tried. As for value question; I only rate on value at the time of purchase/release.

Can you imagine the value factor of an 86 Grange purchased on release in today's terms?

Really? As in right now it's drinking better than the 01 with an extra year in bottle or comapratively at each wine's respective time of release?

I've seen the '02 pop its head up around these parts at around $70 a bottle and am tempted to grab a bottle. Unfortunately the bank account is saying otherwise!

It might be, depends whether you like it or not.

Had a mate in WA bring back a couple of bottles recently and apart from being youg and a bit overdone with the oak, it was pleasant, but not sure if I would agee with its price point.
