Was checking the Harper Collins website like you do and saw JH's 2006 Wine Companion due this Wednesday. Interesting stats was that the number of pages will be 624 and a further 400 new wineries. I just had a look at my 2005 edition and that has a similar number of pages and several hundred new additions as well. Just thought what may have happenned in the past 12 months;
a) font size has been reduced to get a further 400 wineries in without increasing page numbers,
b) less detail & review for each winery or
c) 400 wineries in and 400 wineries out!
Just have to wait til the 27th.

What sort of score did he give Seppelt St Peters 2002? I wonder if he has the 2003 in there too.

this edition doesn't have a review of the 2003 st peters, but it does have:

st peters 2002: 96 points
st peters 2001: 96 points
st peters 2000: 96 points
drumborg riesling 2004: 96 points
chalambar 2001: 95 points
chalambar 2003: 94 points
chalambar 2002: 90 points
chalambar 2000: 94 points
show sparkling shiraz 1994: 95 points.

I do think the 2002 is atleast a point better than the two before it.

Also something else out Tomorrow is LANGTONS new Classification. At 12pm to be precise.Should be interesting.

Exceptionals are Grange,Moss Wood,MT Mary Quintet,Leeuwin Art Chard,707,Wendouree, and new--Giaconda Chard, Rockford Basket Pressed,Cullen Diana Cabernet,Bass Phillip Reserve

The Langtons Classification MK IV is out tomorrow and will be available on the website from midday onwards at http://www.langtons.com.au

The classification when originally released in 1991 listed 34 wines and has since expanded to include 64 wines in 1996, 89 wines in 2000 and now 101 wines in 2005, and will next be revised in 2010.

There will be a snazzy little booklet with the next AGT Wine magazine that covers the new classification.

Could be old news but Peter Bissel has won Wine Maker Of the Year. Where is he from? I know its a Coonawarra Winery.

Turns out that the product range listing for each winery has been removed. I don't mind that so much.

Websites are now listed where applicable which I am happy to have.

96 points for 00 Grange I havent tried it yet but that seems ver different to all the others

I've checked out my copy and there are only 172 new wineries.

There is also a typo on page 82.

I don't have the book, but i checked the HarperCollins website again and it definitely say "over 400 new wineries rated".
P.S. I still don't know how to cut and past quotes...can someone please explain.

In the book there are 172 wineries markedas new to the 2006 edition. Believe me Deano I have counted the bloody things. There are 172. On page six it says 172, on the back page it says 172.

The HarperCollins website says 400, and my preview at http://www.vinodiversity.com/halliday06.html says 400, but there are 172 in the book.

I am compiling a list of what varieties the new wineries are using and I will make another post about it on the weekend.

I've bought the previous 5 editions, but this year, not for me. The changes over the last 5 years have taken their toll.

Not record of past wines makes me look elsewhere. I know the theory is that you will save every edition and have your records that way but bloody hard to compare from book to book and back.

As a relative newbie to the fine wine world in general and Halliday in particular, I'm wondering if anyone knows what criteria are used to decide which wines appear with tasting notes in the book? For example, Craiglee is listed as a 5-star winery, but there are NO tasting notes for any of their wines. Dutschke the winery is listed, and there are tasting notes for their fortifieds, but no notes on the table wines. Likewise, there are no notes on the Voyager Estate Cabernet Merlot. Seems a little odd to me ...

Yep, even Halliday is struggling with the explosion of new wineries in this country. Trying to list them all means depth on existing wineries is sacrificed.

Just a sign of the times.

I don't own the '06 WC but from memory, the wines listed in the '05 WC (as per the new one) had some notable omissions - I think JH lists only those wines that he's tasted in the previous twelve months. I must agree with one of the guests - I liked the inclusion of the best vintages of a particular wine, something that is now left out.
