Frozen Wine Again !

Hi folks,

I know this may have been asked many times but may be this time I would add a little twist to the story - albeit a sad one  .

I was visiting a friend who have just started drinking wine about six months ago just yesterday.

True to a starter, he bought a wine fridge - a brand called Farella that store up to 30 bottles.

As his collection start to grow(just like all beginners), he somehow managed to stuff 50 odd bottles into that tiny fridge. That's where the fridge start to gather frost at the back(inside the fridge) and all his bottles got frosted  .

My friend is now a worried man. He got some expensive stuff in there and most of it are all frosted ! But strangely, I realized that there may be frost around the bottle but the wine doesn't seems to get frozen.

Here's my questions or rather my pal's concerns :

a) Is there some anti-frost being added to the wine to prevent it from being frozen ?

b) At what temperature will it get frozen ?

c) What are the possible damages in the long term and short term? (I assured him that its ok except that it doesn't age the wine. Well, he's not entirely convinced () until some other folks testify it. Now you know the reason for the posting)

Appreciate some candid relpy. But be sensitive, a very  man will be reading.

Cheers,
RY

If the wine has not been frozen it should be OK. Heat is much more of a problem than a short period of cold. Wine has alcohol in it so the freezing point is below 0 degrees. The higher the percentage of alcohol the lower the freezing point of the liquid (to a set limit.)

I doubt the wine will have sustained any long term damage provided it did not freeze.

Roland, I'm afraid I'm a little less optimistic. If the wine hasnt been frozen thats one thing, but I've found that when I've left white wines in the fridge for too long prior to consumption, the flavour seems to dissipate. No science in this though I'm afraid.

I'd be worried if the wines have seen an extended period of cold (5 degrees or so, a typical refrigerator), and I assume its cold if there frost in there :!:

cheers

Andrew,

 The thought of the c-through factor never even crossed my mind.
