I received my mail order form today, prices seem unchanged from last year, no straight cabernet on my list.

Brian, how much are they from CD? I only see the auction prices.

I thought I may as well give everyone the full details of each wine offered:

2003 Wendouree Shiraz Mataro
A blend of Shiraz (84%) and Mataro (16%) from 1893 Central, and 1920 Eastern, vineyard plantings.
$36 per bottle

2003 Wendouree Shiraz Malbec
A blend of Shiraz and Malbec in equal proportions, from 1893 Central, and 1920 Eastern, vineyard plantings.
$38 per bottle

2003 Wendouree Shiraz
A straight Shiraz from 1919 Eastern vineyard plantings and 1893 Central bush vines.
$42 per bottle

2003 Wendouree Cabernet Malbec
A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (70%) and Malbec (30%) from 1898 and 1975 Central, 1920 Eastern, and 1971 Western, vineyard plantings.
$42 per bottle

2002 Wendouree Muscat of Alexandria
A lightly fortified dessert wine made from a 1940 Eastern vineyard planting of Muscart of Alexandria (in 375mL bottles).
$18 per bottle
$108 per six (6) bottles

Some Wendouree vineyard deductions:
Although I am sure these deductions could be confirmed with a phone call, for what it is worth, here are deductions that can be made from the last 3 years of Wendouree releases:

There are 8 separate Wendouree vineyard areas:

1893 Central
1893 Central bush vines
1898 Central
1919 Eastern
1920 Eastern
1940 Eastern
1971 Western
1975 Central


These vineyards are planted to:

1893 Central - Shiraz and/or Malbec and/or Mataro
1893 Central bush vines - Only Shiraz
1898 Central - Shiraz and/or Cabernet and/or Malbec
1919 Eastern - Definitely Shiraz and maybe Malbec
1920 Eastern - Cabernet Sauvignon and/or Malbec and/or Shiraz and/or Mataro
1940 Eastern - Definitely Muscat of Alexandria and definitely one or both of Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec
1971 Western - Definitely Cabernet Sauvignon and maybe Malbec
1975 Central - Definitely Cabernet Sauvignon and maybe Malbec

Geez I admire these guys.

Where is their $120 flagship red?

All these fast buck chasers who put out their $100+ wines after producing 2-3 vintages should take a leaf out of their book.

I'll probably never try one of their wines which is probably fair enough because I wouldn't appreciate it fully, but more power to them.

What I'm trying to say is these wines are the QPR yardstick you should use when you are thinking about buying any other AUS wine.

ie: Hmm, will I pay $225 for that bottle or would I prefer 6 bottles of Wendouree?

What's the big difficulty with getting onto the Wendouree list? After all the hubub about their wines on this forum, I decided to give them a call. Spoke to some dude, told him I'd heard their wines were tops, asked him if I could buy some or if there was a mailing list I could join. He took my details, and sent me the order form post-haste. Sent my order in today (fingers crossed that it's not too late).

I found the same with Mount Mary.

However, it will be interesting to see if you get much in such a low yield year.

No doubt. I submitted an order for 2 mixed cases, and can imagine that I'll receive only a fraction of what I asked for. Hopefully I'll score some brownie points though, and work my way towards one of the fabled Crayola marks

I didn't buy last year and they dropped me off the list.
I admire the winery but these wines are for dreamers.
Can't buy them, can't drink them short term, wait for 10 years then find out it's a dud vintage - who cares !
I have read many reviews that the wines are heavy,archaic and old fashioned.

Halliday keeps talking about the iron fist in the velvet glove when he talks about these wines.

I got on the list and bought some and tried it for myself. I liked them and was happy with their aging potential.

You should try a bottle yourself and make up your own mind.

Old-fashioned - yep.
Archaic - getting a bit emotive here, for no reason that I can understand.
Heavy - no way. Nothing heavy in these wines. Far too structured.

Whats wrong with heavy, old fashioned, and archaic?

Heavy is one of those vague descriptors like "big'. If its an indication of depth of fruit, palate weight and intensity its no detraction in my book. This is what I would hope for off century old dryland vineyards.

Old fashioned. Granted they are hard to get, but Wendouree are one of a few long term producers where substance still comes before style. In an industry peppered with modern homogenous offerings, you come to appreciate the individuals. People laud St Henri and Tahbilk 1860's for the very same characters.

Archaic. Not really an issue that needs addressing if people are lining up to get on the mailing list!

Forget what the CD price is and see if you think the auction price is value compared to other wines of similar price.

I think on that basis they're actually quite affordable at auction which also allows you to accumulate what you really want from the best vintages without having to buy every year.

They are very long term wines but not so chunky they won't go down young.

Good one Jamie. I note that the 1999 vintage rates right up there. People are starting to realise just how good 1999 is for longer term wines. IMO alot of 1999s will outshine the 1998 versions within a few years.

Dont underestimate the 98 vintage. The 99s might become greater sooner but 98s are going to take longer than any other vintage in history to show their best and stay there for years. Some 98s will be 40 year wines.
