Hi all

Finally have a few days off work next month.

Off to Adelaide to catch up with friends.

Havent been for years so what wineries do you recommend are worth a visit say in the Adelaide Hills/ Clare areas?

Shaw and Smith is worth a visit, even having to pay for the tasting
Petaluma at Bridgewater Mill is also worth a look. If Hugh is still at the CD, he really makes it worthwhile.

Why Adelaide Hills and Clare as a combination? You have the Barossa in between and McLaren Vale close at hand too,

Ashton Hills is terrific; Hahndorf Hill is okay; but Shaw and Smith is a complete wank, unless you enjoy a slick commercial snow job. Wine snobs. You'd be better off going across the road to Nepenthe where the folks at the door are real people who will talk with you and not at you - for free. If you're there on a Sunday, Mt Lofty Ranges Vineyard is nice. Good little picnic table with a lovely view for lunch, as well.

Don't miss Kilakanoon if you're going to Clare.

I cant agree with this. True, it is different to most cellar doors. I've been treated well every time I've been to Shaw and Smith. Classy it was, snobbish it wasnt.

Nepenthe is fun too, and you're right, it is completely different to S&S. Some nice wines there, but some ordinary gear too.

I had my second visit to the Clare about a month ago, and for wine quality and cellar door experience I would recommend Jeanerret, Kilikanoon*, Mt Horrocks*, Cardinham and Sevenhill Cellars. The stars indicate CD open on weekends only, though appointments can be made for other days, I think. Annie's Lane wines are great, especially the Coppertrail series; ditto for Leasingham's Classic Clare series. Tim Adams had some excellent wines on tasting, especially the 2002 Aberfeldy. If you can get an appointment at O'Leary Walker (no cellar door), they make some outstanding wines.

Skillogallee has some nice wines, and is a nice stop for lunch. I enjoyed the food at the Sevenhills Hotel for dinner. They have a nice, reasonably priced cellar (usually $1 over CD prices); you pay $7 extra for BYO.

I loved the Clare, with its excellent scenery, wonderful wines, and low key, friendly CDs. Enjoy!
