A cloudy, dark purple with a very nice nose of concentrated black cherry, typical minty/eucalypt and some underlying sweet blackcurrant.
Good intensity on the palate with nice fruits, medium body, stiff/furry tannins and good length. The palate was a bit sloppy and I thought it would probably benefit from at least 3 more years in the cellar before trying another.

I think I can safely assume you took my advice and decanted it fairly well in advance this time (I think I've suggested it at least the last three times we've caught up!)

There still seems to be a fair bit of bottle variation with the 1998 Black Label at this stage; I'm guessing the more advanced bottles are looking smart, while the rest need a lot more time in the dungeon. Was this an auction bottle by chance?

No, it was a recent gift from the cellar of a friend.
