I hear that the Australian Wine Writer of the Year award is being announced in the next few days. Officially called the Saltram Wne Communicator award, or something like that. New award. Run by the press club. Anyone have the inside skinny?

my guess is either Huon Hooke or Tim White, with Jeni Port as an outside chance.

Most of these award are very political.

If I have to nominate, Campbell M in the Professional Catogery and TORB as the best Amateur.
Amateur as in someone who engages as a pastime passion, certainly not lacking the skill of a professional.

TORB and Campbell would be good choices, though I suspect that online practitioners somehow don't get the kudos of the book types. More's the pity. Those guys produce more good stuff each year than just about anyone.

I think maybe Huon Hooke will get it. If this is the first year they are running it, then the inaugural winner is likely to be establishment. Politics, politics etc

Is there a link we can have to confirm this besides a post from "guest"! Nothing on the Wine Press Club or Winefront Monthly sites as yet - although its early and they might still be celebrating.

Happened last night, Campbell still doing burnouts around Beechworth and trying to clear the head! No doubt he'll tell us some more when things settle and he gets some sleep.

Can I add my two cents in here and congratulate Campbell heartily. He is by far and away the most exciting wine writer I have ever had the pleasure to read. The passion shines through in every tasting note but more importantly, Campbell manages to evoke fascinating images that leaving a lasting memory.

This award certainly restores some of my faith in these things as the contribution Campbell has made over the last couple of years has been outstanding. And to think we saw him here first.

Many thanks to you all - you are all very very kind - and Kris is right, it all started here, and would've ended here if you good folk hadn't taught me so good. So a double thanks.

Indeed, if it weren't for the people here I wouldn't have the chance to stretch out and see what I can write - for good or ill - because winefront monthly is the only place that really allows me to say what I want, in the way I want, with the freedom I want - the most precious foundations for any writer. By the people here I mean the people who visit these forums and subsequently subscribe, and in doing so keep traces of oil on the rag, so that I can keep going with it. Fair also to say that last night was a very humbling night. Finalists Jeni Port and James Halliday were beautifully supportive - and to both of them it must seem like I've only been around wine for five minutes. Their wine knowledge way, way surpasses mine.

Well done. We early subscribers can congratulate ourselves on our clear vision and selectivity!

We're coming to Albury on Monday/Tues, and then on to Melbourne for 4 days. Any chance of a catch-up? I was going to PM Murray as well. I've left it all a bit late to try and organise any kind of official offline, but the odd casual meal might be fun (there are family committments we have too, and I understand others might be the same..)

Irrespective of that, it's good news for WFM, and I hope it goes from strength to strength. Even enough to a Sydney dinner some time perhaps?

Congratulations Campbell from one of your more recent subscribers.

One word of advice. Don't change a winning formula too much.

The thing I like about WFM is the content. I don't need glossy colour pics or fancy layouts, it's the words that count.

BTW - my favourite article was the Hunter Valley one. Great read.

Any idea where you're going in Italy? I'm guessing Piemonte & Tuscany but the whole country is interesting & I'm sure you'll have a great time.
