Is this a fair a very general statement;

EQUIVALENT QUALITY BORDEAUX IS 3 TIMES MORE EXPENSIVE THAN MARGARET RIVER/COONAWARRA.

How do you define quality?
Different styles for different folks!

You are really comparing apples and oranges here, nevertheless given that you have used large bold capitalised type, I take it you are either a) passionate about Cabernet or b) are passionate about typing in such a fashion? I digress, it is an unfair comparison, broad and sweeping if you wish. A comparison of producers would be more robust, however still a very difficult comparison. Stylisitically, the wines you are comparing are very different, both viticulturally and oenologically.

That aside, how are you measuring quality?

My greatest Australian Cabernet experiences: Wynns John Riddoch, Yarra Yering Dry Red No.1 (how this varies with vintage!), Cullen, Clarendon Hills Sandown. Price range: $50-$150. Bordeaux: Chateau Margaux, Latour, Poyferre (less Cabernet in the blend). Price range: $70-$400. Well, price-wise you're not that far off, but then we start measuring quality...can anything compare to, say, an 1983 or 2000 Margaux? I'm voting 'No'.

The 2001 Dame de Montrose cost me $28 en primeur and I far prefer it to both the Cullens and Moss Wood of the same vintage, both of which are approximately 3 times the cost of the Bordeaux!!
