Thanks in advance to those who replied.

As someone new to the enjoyable experience of having a red wine Past 2 yrs on a regular basis I now feel that my liver is catching up fast.

A friend who is having a birthday in a couple of months has been my mirror so to speak to bounce all things wine off of as he has been consuming it a lot longer than I.

Along with reading , web searching, tasting etc I am still raw in many areas. Too date I have mainly tasted with him Penfolds vintages from approx 93 onwards latest 96 in 389's, some St Henri's, Bin28 and other assorted wines Wolf Blass Grey, Brown label etc.

I would appreciate any suggestions of a wine in similar style but not necessarily Penfolds in the price range above in a vintage that could be drunk on the night or put away for a few more years.

Seppelt St Peter's 1999 is freely available and drinking well.

I would go something 'not mainstream' and with a bit of class and hard to get. The wines a winelover has alaways wanted to try but hasn't had the opportunity. Jasper Hill Emily's Paddock springs to mind.

Some recent favourites that come to mind;

1995 or 1996 Houghton Jack Manns
1991 or 1994 Orlando Lawsons
1999 McWilliams Maurice O'Shea Shiraz
1991 Henschke Cyril Henschke
1994 Kays Block 6
1991 St Hallets Old Block

What about a 98 Reschke Empyrean Cabernet? I think Gavin's selling it for $115.

I agreed with the Empyream 1998.
If u decide for a Shiraz, get the O'LEARY WALKER RESERVE CLAIRE 2002 Drinking extremely well now and will cellared for another 2 decades.

Mount Pleasant Maurice O'Shea Shiraz 2000. Up to $70 at auction...maybe $50 retail.
Wirra Wirra RSW Shiraz 2002. Under $50.
O'Leary Walker Reserve Shiraz 2002. Under $100.
Tim Adams The Aberfeldy 2002. Under $50.
Wendouree Shiraz from some good vintage. Probably about $100.
Cullen Cab Merlot 2001. Under $100.
Moss Wood Cab Sav 2001. Maybe under $100.
Torbreck The Descendant 2002. A bit over $100.
Langmeil The Freedom 1999. About $60.
Seppelt St Peters 1998. About $50 I guess.
Seppelt Rare Tokay or Rare Muscat. About $60.
Clonakilla Shiraz Viognier. About $70 at auction.

I must second Kieran's suggestion of The Aberfeldy. Waaaayyy underpriced. Maybe an Aberfeldy AND a Meshach, Fox Creek Reserve etc. For something different, you have to try Greenock Creek Apricot Block (2000 or 2002) or Alice's Shiraz (2001, 2002). If you like the Brown Label, the odds are you'll like Alices...though it's so much better!

If you are wanting to drink it on the night (with him I suggest), go up to the $120 mark and buy the 1995 Moss Wood Cabernet. A glorious wine.

Emily's didn't spring to mind because I've not tried any; but Georgia's did - the 99 is outstanding. In a very different style but just as outstanding is Cullen CM 99. Then so too is Tahbilk 1860s Vines Shiraz 95. I guess the problem would be in finding any of these wines anywhere other than at auction, if there.

Oh yes, forgot about this one, it is a fantastic wine, well worth trying.
