Sydney Top 100 Wines 2005

Post by Brucer »

We worked our way through the 200 wines for tasting at the Top 100 in Sydney last night. Now included for tasting is the 100 wines that went well with food.

Reds that we thought were worth mentioning are...

Light Body Reds
2001 Rosemount Mountain Blue
2002 Ross Estate Cab Sauv
2002 Penfolds RWT is in the right catagory, and was rather disappointing considering the year, and the price it will sell for.

Medium Body Reds
2001 Rosemount GSM
2002 Fox Creek Reserve Cabernet. I thought this was sensational, rich fruit, beautifully balanced.
2001 Vito McLaren Vale Shiraz. Never heard of it, but it was good. Needs to be under $20 to be a winner.
2002 Balgownie Shiraz Will be good in a few years.

Full Body Reds (my favourite catagory!)
2000 Lindemans St George. Very good wine, back up to form. Everyone liked this wine.
2002 Dominique Portet Heathcote Cabernet. Sensational!
2002 dArenberg Dead Arm. My notes read...shut, savoury, shut, not sweet, shut, grape tannins, could be good in 10 years.
2002 Turkey Flat Cabernet. Another great Cab from Turkey.
2002 Chateau Reynella Shiraz. Very nice wine.
2002 Seppelt St Peters Sensational
2001 Penfolds RWT Shiraz. Wow! Mind blowing. Left the 02 RWT for dead.
Probably the wine of the night.
2002 Wirra Wirra RSW Shiraz.
2003 Morambro Creek Padthaway Shiraz. I loved the 02 of this at last years show, but havent seen it around. This is not as good, but still worth a mention. Sells for around $20 I believe.

I gave the Champagne section a miss, along with the rieslings. I tried about 2 sauvignon blancs, 2 chards, and 1 pinot. That cut out about half the wines, so I would have tasted around 100 wines.
My palate was fine, and we then went out for dinner and had some great aged wines.
