1999 Wolf Blass Platinum Label Shiraz

1999 Wolf Blass Platinum Label Shiraz – one of the three best WB wines I’ve ever had (73 & 83 Black Label being the others). Beautifully perfumed nose with notes of mulberry, pepper, caramel and spice. The palate is full bodied with flavours of dark berries, malt and savouriness, leading to a fine, ripe tannin finish. Super acid profile and a brilliant wine in the making. This wine is a mere pup and will really sing in 5 years time.
{The oak is in balance being a combination of French and American. (Memo Beringer – they don’t all need lashings of coconut and vanilla oak !)}
PS - it cost me USD54 - a heap cheaper than at home.

Is that about their usual price in the US?
If so we're being ripped off badly here although WET & GST are partly to blame.

707,
That is the price the '99 is freely available at. The 01 though, is about USD75 (so Aussies are still being ripped off !).

Mike, Buy the 2001, brilliant stuff. The best Platinum yet.
US$75 is bloody cheap by anywhere standard. Over here in Asia, it's available for US$110-120.
The W.B. cellardoor is very generous, the Platy 2001 is freely available for tasting. A frd of mine paid AU$190 CD!!!

Ouch...I can get the 01 anytime for Au $160 but see that as too expensive.

I just got a retail mailer. The 2001 is on sale for USD 59.
The pricing disparities are weird, as most SA shiraz over here costs way more than it does in Oz.

2001 is Not in the same class as O'leary Walker Reserve 02 and its much dearer so why the hype?

It all comes to down to personal preference. Both lovely wines though I would put the Platinum 01 ahead even after taking into account the prices. I have seen alot of good rating on it too as where I hav'nt seen much on the Walker.

I was in Toronto in October 2004 and paid $70 CAN for the 1999 Platy, which at the conversion rate was $78 AUD.
A great wine, but no way would I pay $160 for it here.
