2002 Winstead Pinot Noir – 13.5% - Bagdad, Southern Tasmania
Powerful, sweet aromatics on a nose that change every 5 minutes. Dark cherry, fruit of the forest compote, sappy strawberry, very slightly candied, and stewed rhubarb. The oak is subtle, providing a little vanilla that combines with the fruit to give a touch of blueberry. Very good intensity, medium depth and very broad on the palate. Pure and sweet New World Pinot Noir that keeps good focus. Fine, powdery, slightly chalky tannins carry the sweet fruit to a long finish. This wine has the structure to age but is absolutely gorgeous now after 30 minutes in a decanter. 18.2/20. $30 and worth every cent. This is the best Tasmanian Pinot Noir I have tasted and there is a Reserve bottling of this wine that I have not tried.
