Excellent articles those. I've commented several times in the past few months that we are no longer seeing the over oaked (and I'm oak tolerant) wines of even a couple of years ago.

At recent Blacktongues lineups like Super Premium Shiraz one could hardly find much oak dominance whereas three years ago they all showed overt coconut and vanilla. At the 2002 Barossa Cabernet tasting the Mamre Brook I've liked on its own and bought in quantity looked all wood compared to it's peers and I downpointed it accordingly.

We are fast learners and now making the best wines we've ever made. I think palates have matured as well with knowledgable people not wanting wood dominant wine. At the low end of the market I think that wood still does sell.

Especially if it involves chips and micro-oxygenation.

Oh yes, the average punter still loves that taste of vanillan coconut in their reds, provides a bit more substance to the thin drops that haunt the low end.
