Can anyone tell me about this wine? Is there much around and how many vintages have there been and how good is it? Is it worth its high $ asking price?

Thanx in advance

I tried it at CD a couple of weeks ago. Very good wine! There is still a bit of it around but IMHO, its way overpriced. The current vintage is the first release.

I can't stand it but I have to concur with TORB.

I tried the wine at CD last Monday. Very nice wine in the lush full velvety fruit style but way overpriced especially when tasted against some of Saltrams "lesser lights" which showed extraordinary value for the money, and when compared to the premium wines at other CDs selling at way less.

If I'm not mistaken, the current release is their 2000 vintage. No doubt it's good but I won't punt my $$$ on it. Might consider their 2002 JWT winner. The rule of the thumb is only buy wines on excellent - exceptional years esp. those super premium trophy wines.

Only the 2000 released so far and a great wine condidering the vintage but at that price point ouch! The price point is only wrong if they can't sell it so it is correctly priced.

Supplies are limited and allocations only go to a handful of retailers in each state I believe.

The 2001 is not far away from release as they've started to dish out invitations to the big release black tie bash.

The scramble will be for the 2002, now that should be something to consider buying given the vintage and the winemaking team. The stupid JWT just complicates things.

Steve,

They spent a bucket load (or two) of money when it was lauched and on support material. To the best of my knoweldge, some of the retailers who were given the limited allocations still have stock, almost a year after release. Also, its still available for sale at CD.

Yep, you have to love that particular award don't you.

The 94 Leasingham Classic Clare Shiraz that won is an excellent example of the BS surrounding this. The wine is aged for 2 years on oak, so was judged only half way through its maturation. The wine that ended up in the bottle would be somewhat different than the wine that was judged.

Oh well, just another example of marketing attempting to stuff up our lives I guess.

Blast Jimmy and all who sail in her, I say.

Davo, the '02 Pepperjack (Barossa) cabernet and great value at $15 is a recent find for me. Can you list others.

Chuck,

Both the Pepperjack Shiraz and Cab Sauv 2003 as tasted at CD were excellent value drinking at the CD price of $20, but the Mamre Brook 2002 Shiraz and Cab Sauv selling at the same price at CD were absolutely outstanding wines at their price and better than a lot tasted at more than twice the price.

The Saltram No 1 ( I think 2002 but I did not notate the vintage) was superb in comparison to the Eight Maker and less than 1/3 the price at CD, ie $60 cf $200.

Davo,

I prefered the Metala Black lable and thought it had a better structure and oak balance than the No1.
