2004 Deakin Estate Sauvignon Blanc (Screwcap): Extremely pale green/yellow colour. Very ripe, tropical nose, primarily of banana, lychees and pineapple. The palate is just as ripe and fruity, with just a hint of astringency on the finish.

2004 Katnook Estate Sauvignon Blanc (Screwcap): Extremely pale green/yellow. The nose is marginally less open than the Deakin, with capsicum, asparagus and a hint of grass. The palate follows a similar theme; spicy, pickled capsicum/asparagus with good length.

2004 Katnook Estate Riesling (Screwcap): A relatively closed nose after the two Sauvignon Blancs, with just a trace of grass, mineral and yeast. The palate is quite unusual, again with those grass and yeast characters, and a hint of lime and mineral, finishing long and soft.

2004 Deakin Estate Rose (Screwcap): Salmon pink colour. A fairly standard and inoffensive version, with slight cherry/plum fruit, light weight and short length.

2002 Deakin Estate Merlot (Screwcap): Dark red/purple. A very good quaffing Merlot, with spicy/plummy fruit matched with substantial French & American oak. Nothing spectacular, but a good effort for the cheap price unlike the following wine.

2002 Deakin Estate Shiraz (Cork): Dark red/purple. Disgusting, stinky nose of roadkill, dog-poo and diesel fumes and a touch of band aid; these are all on the palate, which is short and astringent. This would have to be the close to the worst 2002 red wine I have tried – even at $8.99 it’s total crap.

2002 Deakin Estate Cabernet Sauvignon (Screwcap): Red/purple colour. Simple, sweet cherry flavours, supported by moderate spicy oak. Compared to the previous wine it’s inoffensive but simple and hardly inspiring. They were quick to point out Philip White chose it as his best bargain red in the 2004 Advertiser Top 100, quoting him saying “I estimated a price of $40.” I think Whitey must be going mad to print a comment like that.

2002 Katnook Estate Shiraz (Cork): Dark crimson with a hint of brick already, a real shock for the vintage. Very peppery on the nose, with a touch of stink like the Deakin at first; this blew off with some air, showing masses of milled white pepper, cherry and earth. The palate is sweet and peppery with dry dust/earth and some leather; like the colour very surprisingly advanced for a 2002.

2001 Katnook Estate Cabernet Sauvignon (Cork): Dark to inky red/purple. Tightly grained, spicy/lemony oak dominated the nose at first, with some dried herbs appearing with breathing. The classy French oak is again very prominent on the chewy, medium-weight palate, again with hints of earth and dried herbs.
