Bowen Estate Shiraz

Post by Guest »

I have read with interest here that many people here dont rate this wine as being good or better. I would be interested to know what the reason is for this.

I tried an 02 the other night and found it was a very elegant wine with good fruit. It is great now although might not get better. Will be getting another bottle to put away for 5 years and try then.

Bowen has made some stunning wines over the years and was arguably the best estate in Coonawarra during the 80s.

It is however a name that can bring heated controversy as to it's recent performances. I know a couple of posts that snowballed into everyone saying the wines weren't up to it, a bit like the 2002 Dead Arm debate.

Now they have no trouble selling their wines so obviously a very large number of people do like their wine.

At the end of the day you need to buy what suits you not what other people say is or isn't good.

As for the 2002 Bowen Shiraz, I liked it and bought it as did many friends. You'd be doing yourself a favour by buying more than just one to put away.

If you can see through it, it's not worth drinking!

Bowen variations

I tried the 2002 at the Perth Coonawarra road show last year (September I think) and was very impressed - so were my fellow tasters.

Tried it again at the winery in October. Similarly I thought it was great (not spectacular) – especially for the price.

Bought 2 bottles for 2 blind tasting tastings in Perth in January and was unimpressed.

Is this bottle variation, transport conditions or perhaps more than 1 bottling??

Can anyone find out if there were multiple bottlings to a different 'recipe'??
