Browsing the current melbourne auction and looking at some bottles from birth-years.

None of the books I have, or things i've looked up shed light on the aforementioned.
Any advice or hints would be greatly appreciated.

And the line-up is :

I'm well aware of the adage that theres no such thing as a great old wine... just great old bottles - so just after general impressions/advice.

The 1971 Chiltern Rutherglen VP should be a reasonable bet, they used to make some rippers in the early/mid 70's, often straight durif, possibly the best wines they made.

The rest you take your chances...

That prolly sums it up. There's prolly a reason too - like pretty ordinary when they came out. When in doubt, fire off an email to the wineries and ask them. I've had the Seppelt, Redman and Orlando but in younger vintages from late 70s in the mid and late 80s and they were ordinary then. But if the bid estimates are low, go for 'em. One strike will make it all worthwhile.

If the Orlando is the 1971 barossa cabernet with some shiraz , I had it about 6 months ago and it was extraordinary good and in excellent condition.

I have recently only had Redmans from the early 80's but they were superb.

The Chiltern Vintage Port would be Durif based, and could well be the best on your list.

They can be bought quite reasonably on occasion.The Roscoe is excellent, (named after his Dad)
