TN: Penfolds Bin 707, Cabernet Sauvignon 1994

Tasting Room 'brief' TN;
Last year I got to taste the a Grange '94 at the Australian wino-rama, a sneaky bottle hidden behind the sign, this year it was from a magnum of '94 707.
I don't know whether this was at peak or if it could go 4-5 more years, but it seemed pretty near perfect to me, yet still very full for most palates.
Silky softy tannins, full, rich and warm cherry-plum earthy fruit, cedar, leather, and barny dust.
Smooth, very long silky finish.
Can I give it 95 Mishy pnts ? :wink:
11 years and still going.

Mishy,

Glad you liked it- it's a very good wine, but from a tasting I had last year I think it needs many more years to be fully ready. I found it tight,closed and very tannic, a monster that appeared stuck in adolescence. Still very primary in nature, I thought that it had at least a decade in front of it, and I'm avoiding mine for another 5 years, and then giving a good decant.

This is all too chummy guys, we all agree! Surely there's a "Get Stuffed" out there on this topic?

Last had one of these a couple of years back and just sealed up the six pack again with a mental note for another look in five years or so, maybe I might not rush that now.

I wouldn't leave it for 10 more years, but I s'pose it could go that long. For my palate I might be tempted keep it 5 more, and remember this was a magnum I tasted from and it was aerated for several hours prior.
If it gets any stinkier with earth and leather over time I probably wouldn't care for it as much as I did now.
So what do you all do on Australia Day? Get stuffed ?

Mishy, and a BIG "get stuffed' to you too.

Had an Aust Day BBQ at a mates, good line up of wines I didn't really concentrate on.

2002 Robert Mondavi Private Reserve Cabernet was ok, not enough fruit for me
1997 Turkey Flat Shiraz was drinking well
1999 Wirra Wirra Angelus was good, touch green, good tannin, enjoyed it
2002 Glaymond Cabernet was WOTBBQ for several, power, feel, humm
2000 Charles Melton Shiraz was just ok, looked a bit stewy and developed

I'll add some others when I think of them.
