2001 MOUNT PLEASANT Old Paddock & Old Hill Shiraz

This wine took my breath away at the Mount Pleasant winery in the Hunter Valley. I absolutely adore old vine Shiraz and the 2001 OP&OH is simply wonderful.

Released as a single vineyard wine, grapes were picked from the 121 year old vines of the Old Hill and the 80 years old vines of the Old Paddock vineyards. Grapes were fermented in new American and French oak and then matured in the same barrels for 18 months. Alcohol is at 13.5% vol.

Colour dark cherry red. Black cherries, raspberries on the nose and after swirling some interesting smoked bacon aromas.
The most seductive and charmingly velvety palate follows. It is an absolutely gorgeous drink right now. A wine that I thoroughly enjoyed. Richly fruity and juicy sweet black cherry flavours mixing with some exotic overripe plum - this is top drinking. This wine is one of the best examples of old vine Shiraz I have ever tasted.

It will cellar for 10+ years no doubt but it is so delicious that I urge everyone to open a bottle now. A great bargain at AU 30+, I absolutely recommend it because it is quite simply fantastic! This is a most beautiful and authentic Hunter Valley red.

Cheers,
Attila
