Just a new article hitting the world of finance today.

MELBOURNE (Dow Jones)--Foster's Group Ltd. (FGL.AU) said Thursday it has acquired an 18.8% stake in rival premium winemaker Southcorp Ltd. (SRP.AU) and is currently in discussions which may lead to a major corporate announcement.

Foster's said it bought the stake at A$4.17 a share compared with Wednesday's closing price of A$4.25.

Tasted this afternoon,


Wynns " Harold Vineyard" Cabernet Sauvignon 2001


Deep purple/ red rim, not immediately expressive but touches of mint, earth, violets and black fruits. Pure blackcurrant on palate, comes at you strongly and hangs in nicely on the finish. Structured to age, bundles of mouth coating, fine,grippy tannin, a very nice wine. Should go 10-15 years with ease. Needs some time in the cellar at present, but I would be happy to own this one. 93 points, and I would expect it to rate higher in 5-7 years time.



Just a footnote, the Hollick Cab Sav 2002 was also tasted alongside it, and is a superior wine at an inferior price. Terrific wine of great intensity and class, a fantastic effort for the vintage, I highly recommend this wine. 95 points

This was not the Hollick Ravenswood was it.

Also on another note, you will need to take better care of our "magical" brissie boys next time.

Re; the Hollick. Went back to it tonight after a few hours, just showing a touch more capsicum/mint on the nose, might have to adjust the rating a touch, maybe 94 points. 95 is a pretty special wine by my rating, probably not quite there on the latest showing but still an excellent wine.

Had the 2001 Wynns Harold with some friends casually over dinner a couple of nights back, didn't concentrate too hard. It's good wine without being special, just the right level of cool climate herbaceousness amongst the blackberry fruit with a touch of mint, nice finish with good length.

Watch the pricing, I've heard $40, I know it's just under $30 for JR Club members through CD, my friend picked it up at an Adelaide retailer for $32 so there's some price variation. Worth having in the cellar at the lower prices and probably a good indicator that Wynns is hitting back.

Re the 2002 Hollick Cab Sauvignon, bloody good wine, in fact all of their 2002 reds are very good and good QPR. These are the best wines they've made for nearly 20 years, my style of wine, could I even say in the Majella mould? Not surprised they won all those gongs at the Limestone Coast Wine Show.

Thanks for the note Grant. I got hold of a couple of bottles under $30 (Steve knows where), but haven't tried it yet.

I have tried the 2002 Hollick, and it is very impressive but from your notes I would expect it to be a different style of wine. The Hollick is very savoury already, with mushroom, soy, dried herbs and earth characters. From Steve's and your notes (and Sue Hodder's for that matter) the Wynns seems to be more reserved and relatively "clean", dare I say even industrial in comparison. I'd better be careful here, as this could spark the big vs small argument all over again.

In terms of style, it is more expressive in its youth, more lively and intense than the Wynns. It won't be as long lived though, the tannins are much finer and softer(not to mention less abundant)and I think it is a medium term cellaring prospect. This doesn't detract from it though, nor is it damning with faint praise. It's just a lovely wine that will come into its ideal drinking window a little earlier than the afforementioned.
