Three Weeks without Auswine

Post by DJ »

Wow three weeks in a row off with no job or study concerns but it also meant no time at work on the net. But in that time some interesting and great wines - as well as a few which were stuffed.

1996 Cullen C/M fabulous wine secondary development on the nose rich complex fruit. I imagine it will go for sometime but oh so good now.

1983, 1986, 1988, 1996 St Henri - there was another vintage as well but I don't remember which. 86 by far the stnad out 96 too young. 88 continues its odd tannin problem but that was not noticeable with enough cheese. I think I'm over verticals at dinner - they seem to end up with one stand out, all disappointing or all too much the same need more variety.

1990 Eileen Hardy Shiraz - very enjoyable wine but time to drink

2000 Kangarilla Rd Shiraz - pleasant enough but a good example of why I didn't buy much from 2000.

2001 Kangarilla Rd Zinfandel - good wine but not quite my style

1985 Dawson Estate Chardonnay - Anyone remeber this label? The cellar door and vineyards (?) are now owned Capacaille. Not in great shape showing a lot of acid and little fruit but went remarkably well with fried rice - somewhat reminicent of a Hunter Semillon - if I remember correctly 85 was the year of the Elizabeth that McWilliams didn't release because it wasn't good enough.

1994 Barwang Chardonnay - in very good nick, even my ABC wife quite liked it.

1997 Speri Amarone - Outstanding - the highlight of the 3 weeks - in superb balance and complexity - I really must start trying to buy and try more Italians

2000 Passito di p... - an italian made in the muscat baume de venise (sp?) style excellent

1992 E&E Black Pepper - I don't have as many 92s as 91s of this wine but I think this is drinking much better than the 91 at the moment. This wine is showing great fruit where as the 91 is just showing wood. Excellent

1990 Thomas Hardy Cabernet - funny wine lots of wine making gone into it the capsicum character a little out of balance - highly recommended.

1984 Seppelt Vintage Port - don't remember much other than it was very good much too late in the evening for anything other than enjoying

Duds in the 3 weeks included
1991 Seppelt SR Spark Shiraz - brett out of control - yuk
1982 Angove Vintage port - ditto

Disappointment was the 2002 Mitolo Jester Shiraz only had a glass of this at a very good restaurant meal - too much wood, too much mint didn't work with food :?
