1998 Seppelt Original Sparkling Shiraz
Pepper, spice, earth on a deep base of ripe Shiraz fruit with hints of leather. Persistent bead. So complex! Long. I hope that this is not the last great vintage of this wine. It is amazing value. Excellent.

Although this sounds a bit silly, my answer is "I think so".
If I did, and I think I did, it did not make much of an impression as I thought it was too sweet and hence dismissed it in the knowledge that I would have a look at it again in the future, hoping that age would enable it to grow into the class of its of its predecessors, although I was not optimistic. Similarly, I donÂ’t think the 1999 is in the same class although not as far away as the 2002.

I would have loved a more detailed tasting note from you Adair even though I know the wine and I consider this sparkling shiraz to be absolutely fantastic. A few days ago I was in my cellar and selected this 1998 as my Christmas sparkling red wine for this season (last year it was Leasingham) because it's brilliant!
I'll have it with breakfast and I can't wait.
Cheers,
Attila

Keep it up mate, you are starting to sound like a red bigot, now all we have to do is wean you off the c-through stuff.

Tried the 02 sparkling last night. Quite tasty and moderately complex for the price.

Mark,
I tried the 2002 Seppelt Sparkling Shiraz at a picnic last weekend. It was served to me in a plastic cup... and I was quite impressed. Very impressed actually. I will not make any precise judgements, given the serving circumstances, but it seems to be back to its past form. It seems 1999 may have been a one-off dud.

I concur with Adair.
I think the relatively early release date for the 2002 wine confused many palates. It has settled down a lot over the last 6 months and become a lot less sweet/confected. I reckon it will be a good one, though not up to the 98.

The view from the winery (who have a bit of history with this label) is that the 2002 is better than the 1998 when both are measured at the same stage of bottle age.
I'd certainly have no problem tucking a few of the 2002 away; or enjoying them earlier for that matter.

I've tried several bottles of the '99, Adair, and they've all been most enjoyable.
