Not the sort of score that the The Shark is used to making, but I'm sure he's more than a little pleased with it. Its the number of points that his Greg Norman Estates 1999 Reserve Shiraz received from Wine Spectator, which helped the wine to place eighth in the Top 100 Wines for 2004. Its also the top Aussie wine for 2004! [Edit. The PDF is up on eBob as we speak but it probably won't last as it is for online subscribers of WS only.]

Mike, how did the 1998 Greg Norman Reserve rate over there and what kind of price point is it at?

This is an export only label although a couple of bottles did fall off the back of a truck prior to shipping.

Steve:

I've never even seen a bottle of the Reserve Shiraz. The lesser labels are pretty common, but I don't remember trying any. From the winery web site the 1998 Reserve scored a 94 from Wine Spectator. I looked at Parker's site and he gave the 1998 a 91 and the 2000 an 89. He either didn't review, or didn't recommend the 1999. The 2000 Reserve sells for about $45USD. However Wine Commune auctioned a single bottle of the 1999 as 1999 Greg Norman Estates Reserve Shiraz NUMBER 8 WOTY 2004, WS 96!!! - Better than Grange, Astralis, or RunRig!!! and it went for $69USD!!

Thanks Mike, I've got three bottles of the 1998 so might have to look at one soon.

Maybe I might bring one of the 98s to dinner on the 11th. Will be the only time most of us will see this wine as it wasn't released in Australia.

Mark, suitable counterpoint to your likely dinner wines?
