2000 MEEREA PARK Alexander Munro Semillon

Tasting Note No.50

Meerea Park is a lower Hunter winery. Alexander Munro is a reserve label, named after winemaker Rys EatherÂ’s great-great grandfather. The Semillon fruit for this individual vineyard wine was hand picked from the Leonard vineyard in Pokolbin from 35 years old low yielding vines. Fermented in stainless steel, it was bottled early under cork. The cork is unmarked and is of very high quality. This vintage was very good for Semillon.

Colour bright light gold. Fragrant and superb nose of white stone fruits, pear with lime and a hint of asparagus. Silky smooth, quite full bodied and delicious in the mouth. The concentrated fruit is perfectly balanced by excellent mineral acidity. Superb drinking right now but the balance suggests this wine will age easily for another 6 years. Outstanding among Hunter Semillons, a notch above the Mount Pleasant Elizabeth and I prefer it against the 1998 Lovedale for concentration, balance and sheer enjoyment. Beautifully clean and harmonious. Well done by Ryhs Eather. Alcohol is at 12% vol. Recommended retail is $25 and is well worth it. I was extremely lucky to pick it up miss-priced and on sale for AU $13.25. It is a bargain either way.
